Death of Alta. man found in U.K. recycling bin 'not suspicious'

By QMI Agency

The death of a 22-year-old Alberta man whose body was found in a recycling bin in England just a day after he was to attend university is not considered suspicious.
Police said on Monday an autopsy has been done on Garrett Elsey, whose body was discovered at a recycling complex in Bristol, about two hours west of London, on Thursday.
"It's not being treated as suspicious," said Wayne Baker, with the Avon and Somerset Constabulary.
Police were made aware of provisional findings of the autopsy and are continuing the investigation on behalf of the coroner.
No further details have been released about the circumstances surrounding his death.
News of Garrett Elsey’s death first reached his family in Sherwood Park, Alta., near Edmonton, on Thursday.

Elsey, 22, recently graduated from Carleton University in Ottawa and was about to begin postgraduate studies in Bristol, England.
On May 15, Elsey’s Twitter feed expressed his excitement about heading overseas.
“Booked for England!!! Leaving Sept. 24. #excited,” it read.
But less than a day after landing in that country to begin working on a master's degree in the science of international security at Bristol University, authorities said his body was found at a recycling plant about two hours west of London.
"I remember actually putting the letter on to his bed, knowing what it was but waiting for him to come home to see it," said Robin Tomarchio, Elsey's roommate for three years.
Elsey, finishing his undergraduate degree at Carleton University, was elated.
"He was very excited when that happened," a sombre Tomarchio said of his friend.
Tomarchio said Elsey "always knew how to make everybody have a good time and feel safe at the same time," recalling parties he and Elsey would often host.
“The family is quite devastated, both right here in Edmonton, his sisters, his mom and dad, and all his cousins that are across the country,” said Brent Elsey, Garrett’s uncle.
According to Brent, Bristol police have been in regular contact with family in Canada to update them on the progress of their investigation, but few details have surfaced.
Police had cordoned off an area near the university where recycling trucks had passed and the Avon and Somerset Constabulary said investigators are keeping "an open mind" as to what may have happened.
“There are still ongoing investigations both medical and forensic and further investigations. We’re hoping that answers will be coming in the near future,” Brent Elsey said.
So far, the British press has reported Elsey's body may have been put in a recycling bin near the university before a collection truck took it to the recycling plant.
