'Blackberry Finger' gets man arrested

The man who sent s e x text in error to ALL his contacts... and ended up in prison

• Freed after judges hear the messages went out to all his contacts including members of his own family

Craig Evans must have thought things couldn’t get any worse after he accidentally sent a saucy text message intended for a lover to every contact in his phonebook.

How wrong he was!

The 24-year-old swimming coach ended up in prison for s e x offences after the text also found its way to two young schoolgirls.
Evans had typed an intimate invitation to his girlfriend asking her if she would like to engage in s e x with him ‘skin on skin’.

Excruciatingly, a slip of the fingers on his BlackBerry smartphone resulted in it going out via BlackBerry Messenger to all the numbers on his phone.

But as well as having to deal with the humiliation of his family reading the message, Evans’s mistake led to far more serious consequences.

Among the recipients of the text were two girls aged 13 and 14, which led to Evans, who teaches swimming in a leisure centre, being arrested and charged with causing or inciting a child to engage in s e x ual activity.

He was jailed for 18 months at Birmingham Crown Court in July.

Certainly common sense should have prevailed at some point to realize this was a mistake and a full trial was not warrented. He shouldn't be punished for using an inferior "smart"phone.

The lesson here is that If he had an iPhone or Android, this probably wouldn't have happened.

Wow, intent should have been a factor in determining appropriate punishment. Its enough to make one want to get rid of their smart phone. Justice was not served...

This story certainly shows the ridiculousness of 'zero tolerance' policies.

Ive had a BB for ages and I can't fathom how a mere slip can result in this. Regardless, common sense matters, I wish legal systems had more of it.

btw, my hubby ***ts lots. Solution? Get a separate device for work and socializing. $50/month to keep his job is worth it. lol.

Or write a letter the old fashion way for 50 odd cents. You can't screw up by sending it to everybody you know.... some say it's more romantic too

Besides, if someone else opens that letter and their name isn't on that letter... the legality issues fall on them.

nope, paper at work is a bad idea. no one's going to rifle through your password protected personal device.

18 months for that? I don't know, but it certainly does not seem like justice was served to me. Plus, he'll now probably end up as a registered sex offender as well.
