Sam 'The Record Man' Sniderman dies

Sam Sniderman, founder of the Sam the Record Man music store chain, has died according to media reports. He was 92.

The coast-to-coast chain, once one of the biggest in the country, went bankrupt in 2001. His flagship store on Toronto's Yonge Street, which opened in 1959, closed in 2007.

In addition to being a businessman, Sniderman was well known as an advocate for Canadian music and its artists.

Along with his wife, he founded the Recordings Archive Library at the University of Toronto.

He was presented with the order of Canada in 1976.

Sam the Record Man was THE place to buy records, I spent many hours in those joints.

Sam the Record Man....

If he couldn't get it, it wasn't pressed. Rest well, old friend.

When I bought records and even CDs, he was a regular stop. As the CD died, not surprising his business did.

RIP Sam.

Seems to me i bought a whole lot of records at Sams.. before Disco, other recording technologies.. and the collapse of interesting rock, rhythm and blues music.. ruined the music scene in the mid 70s.

He was one of those entrepreneur/showmen/impressarios like Ed Mirvish who gave buttoned-down old Toronto some pizzaz (or chutzpah) in the mid 20th century. RIP

perhaps he should have renamed it sam the cd man, sam the disc man, or sam the music man.
