The alleged shooter, who was killed by police on the scene, has been identified as Jeffrey Johnson, a 53-year-old women's accessories designer who'd been laid off from his job at Hazan Imports. He apparently shot and killed a former coworker before being chased and shot by police; as these photos show, he's said to have been wearing a grey suit. The scene's other victims, it's now believed, were likely hit by stray police bullets — as has been pointed out, Johnson's gun only held eight bullets, three of which he used on his former manager. And yet nine people were shot.

NYPD officers are notoriously bad shots.

Story after story after story tells of them firing dozens of shots and only occasionally, by accident if you will, hitting the target.

It turns out that an officer that shoots 100% on the yearly qualification hits 20% on the street.

The problem is unrealistic training, the candidate standing square on to a target that is completely stationary..............and yearly qualification without any provision for shooting in the interim.

Training with firearms is VERY expensive.

Just heard on CNN (on TV, not on their website yet) that all nine injured
people where accidentally shot by police as collateral damage. The police
responded "as close to textbook as they possibly could" is the statement
being released by the NYPD with the sixteen shots being fired by the two
police officers...and seven of those hitting the gunman.

Sixteen minus seven equals nine so no "stray" rounds.

This just popped up: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/08/25/nyregion/police-decision-to-shoot-in-midtown-left-9-wounded.html

Guess that its different from a paper target and a scum who can shoot back, plus if the cop(s) is/are scared ****less, they chose the wrong job/career.

If the Cop isn't/aren't scared ****less in that situation, they chose the wrong job/career,
or the screening process failed completely.

I spend a significant portion of my life as a "Second Party Collection Agent." If you're
not sure what that is, Google it. Part of the reason I walked away from that occupation
is that near the end, I stopped having my gut clench up on every pop/yoink. Fear in a
situation above is a healthy thing (leading to adrenaline in a massive dose) instead of
just a big chip on the shoulder and a ****ty attitude.
