Saving CNN

Late night and reality shows in works at news channel

Suffering its worst ratings in 20 years, CNN is going Hollywood.

In the past few weeks, the No. 3 cable news channel has started seeking out reality-show ideas and big-name stars not afraid to talk politics. They have even begun working on a late-night talk show, The Post has learned.

( for the drones and mindless bots)

Convinced that its current programming badly needs updating, CNN execs have been making the rounds of Hollywood’s top talent agencies — something entertainment networks do several times a year but a first for the old-line news channel.

In a series of conference calls, the network has also been soliciting ideas from the same producers who supply reality shows to channels like Bravo, Discovery and History, according to sources.

That, too, is a first for CNN, which has refused — until now — to use outside producers to create its shows.

Last month, the man who’d been running CNN for the past decade, Jim Walton, took the fall for the network’s steep ratings slide and will be forced out at the end of the year.

Most people in TV had assumed the news network would wait until it found a new president before tinkering with its ailing prime-time lineup.

But indications are that the pressure is on to overhaul the network now, while it can still be saved.

Among the changes in the works, according to documents obtained by The Post, are:

* A late-night talk show featuring a panel — an 11 p.m. version of “The View.” :lol:

Well thats depressing. Or it would be if I watched tv news. Its not totally surprising. It is odd that people would rather watch reality shows than news stories about things that may actually affect them.

the news networks and similar shows like CNN are suffering and have been for awhile.

its the internet, the news networks have been fighting against the internet for sometime, and all things have a shelf life, unless of course they have a smut

show like fox news, who lie about everything, which brings out certain aspects of the

public, same people who like the national enquirer or other trash rags.

those types of entertainment will always have a following, the lieing blind leading the dumb blind.

those people love to hear smutty things about anyone, probably is their foreplay for the day.

I see this as inevitable -- started happening when MTV stopped playing music. Only figures eventually a news channel will stop playing news.

You mean the Emmy Award winning talk show where they talk politics?

Doesn't sound much different than Larry King.

'Reality' shows? Isn't that what Larry King was - pretend interviews with pretend celebrities.
Is there real some reality in those shows?
the first RS on tv was on MTV and years later one of the participants, said everything that happed on that show was scripted, everything was staged/faked,just like the other false reality shows.

I find that all news and anything that claims to be 'realty' is just flotsam and jetsam in the media world.
News casts, after they perfunctorily announce the news stories of the day, tend to devolve into op eds and product placement pieces.
I'm not even going to elaborate on 'reality TV' because if you think it has any value beyond mindless titillation then no words I could utter would touch your brain.

Why don't they just try reporting the news, instead of fabricating, sensationalizing, or spinning it?

It would be a refreshing change.

Seemed easier to do when you only had to fill an hour or so a day eh? Then ya signed-off and shut yer pie hole.

No doubt.

But if news agencies were to stick to just reporting the news, the Usual Suspects and ideologues would have a bigger work load.

Not that I don't think they're up to the challenge.
