A youth pastor with HIV who recently worked in Saskatoon has been charged in Ontario with luring a child via a computer and attempted aggravated sexual assault.
Kris Allan Gowdy, 42, was arrested Thursday after allegedly making arrangements on social media to meet a 15-year-old male for a sexual encounter, according to a news release from the Durham Regional Police Service.
An investigator with the Ontario Provincial Police Internet child exploitation unit, who posed as a teenage boy online, was befriended online by a man from Newcastle, Ont., and agreed to meet him at a residence to have sex.
Gowdy was arrested by members of the OPP and Durham police when he went to the residence.
Gowdy, who lives in Newcastle, is a youth pastor with the Free Methodist Church in Courtice, Ont., and has travelled extensively during the past decade.
"This luring incident is in no way connected to the church," the release said.
Gowdy was a youth pastor at Lakeview Church in Saskatoon for about one year and resigned on July 22.
Gowdy admitted to having been diagnosed in 2009 with HIV, which was likely contracted in the 1990s, the news release says.
The accused used the profile name "collegetoy2033" and is said to have an extensive social media presence. Investigators are concerned there may be more victims.
There have not been any related complaints in Saskatoon but if there are possible victims, they are encouraged to call the Saskatoon Police Service, spokesperson Kelsie Fraser said.
"If they didn't report it before and they have been made aware via the media articles, we do absolutely want them to contact us," Fraser said.
Gowdy was a youth counsellor in churches in Sussex, N.B., Rochester, N.Y., and Amherstview, Ont.
