Result of renaming Massachusettts state "colleges" to state "universities" is more spending on marketing instead of education

WORCESTER — When supporters of changing the names of the former Worcester State College and the five other former state colleges to state universities advocated for the identity makeover, they argued that the expense would be nominal.

But it turned out there were significant costs, not only for the name change, but also, at Worcester State University, for a recent “rebranding” effort that included a logo redesign and new marketing campaign that involved dumping the school's local advertising agency and hiring a Boston agency at twice the cost.

Starting in 2010, a few months after state lawmakers approved the new name, Worcester State spent $263,610 in capital funds to switch over nearly every sign and other insignia on its campus, from dozens of small traffic signs on campus roads to the large, internally illuminated signs in front of the school, according to purchasing records.

Absolutely, stuff of the stature of 9/11!

Why would it only have to news of that extreme of a nature?

There have been many, many very interesting discussions that have come out of smaller news pieces that are U.S. in origin. Or U.K. in origin, or German in origin, etc.

To me, in the news simply means in the news. As long as the topic may be interesting and can be a starting point for a discussion, then why not post it?

David Frum on Canadian news: The one export we can’t sell

OTTAWA — Hot weather in Central Canada and early departures for the cottage pushed Canada into a significant news deficit in the second half of June, Statistics Canada reported Friday.

All told, Canada exported only one major news story in the second half of June: the UN Human Rights Council’s citation of Canada for its handling of Quebec student protests.

By contrast, Canada was a net importer of news from the Eurozone, the United States, and — for the 55th consecutive year — from the Middle East.

The month had opened very strongly, with a record-breaking surge in news exports.

“Global manhunt for Canadian porn-star cannibal” dominated news markets everywhere. Canada however could not sustain this one-time venture into the lurid dismemberment marketplace. International buyers showed little interest in a mass shooting in Toronto’s Eaton Centre, preferring to rely on their traditional supplier of mass-shooting news, the U.S. postal system.

After the month’s strong first week, the Canadian news supply industry tumbled into a deep slump.

I wouldn't actually belittle the American military but I think these sorta dudes alone would kick an army's arse should they muck with our stuff. I don't even think they wore cups. Just hard and nasty.

I partly agree with you, however I really question the cost of ANYTHING going up in price rates as "news" and the fact of it happening in a foreign country just diminishes its relevance...........I.M.H.P.

Actually the article isn't about prices going up, more about the costs incurred for a 'rebranding' of sorts. It's about questioning the allocation of limited funds. But that's neither here nor there, what each of us would constitute as 'news worthy' would be a subjective thing anyway. Each to their own.

But that's not why I replied anyway. There is a whole spectrum of 'news and issues' in between price rises and events on the scale of 9/11. What you had posted implied that there would only be relevance to it as news if it was of "the stature of 9/11".

My point was that we can take news articles from all over the world and find points of reference for our own experiences here, we can juxtapose the way we, in Canada, do things in comparison to elsewhere, or we can simply have an opinion on what has occurred. I just don't see the point in having an "American News" section. Because then why not a "Greek News" section, or a "British News" section, etc. News is news as far as I'm concerned, the level of importance we place upon it is up to us individually.
