No charges: Prosecutor says messages that closed Hartland HS referenced masturbation, not threats

(WXYZ) - Officials say that messages on social media that led to the cancelation of classes at Hartland High School were not threats, but were rather about masturbation.

According to a report by The Livingston Daily , Livingston County Prosecutor David Morse says the statement that really started the controversy was "I'm polishing my rifle."

The Livingston Daily says the situation began with texts about calendar dates that were sent to about a dozen students, who did not perceive them as threats.

However, from there the texts went viral and students and parents who did not get the reference panicked.

The situation escalated when the school was vandalized with the number 24.

Officials closed the school as a precaution.

It is still being determined if the students responsible will graduate. However, the prosecutor says the 18-year-old who sent the texts will not face charges.
