The therapy, which targets a molecule found in 90 per cent of all cancers, could provide a universal injection that allows patients' immune systems to fight off common cancers including breast and prostate cancer.

Preliminary results from early clinical trials have shown the vaccine can trigger an immune response in patients and reduce levels of disease.

The scientists behind the vaccine now hope to conduct larger trials in patients to prove it can be effective against a range of different cancers.

They believe it could be used to combat small tumours if they are detected early enough or to help prevent the return and spread of disease in patients who have undergone other forms of treatment such as surgery.

Cancer cells usually evade patient's immune systems because they are not recognised as being a threat. While the immune system usually attacks foreign cells such as bacteria, tumours are formed of the patient's own cells that have malfunctioned.

Skeptical. Finding a protein common to 90% of cancers doesn't mean the vaccine will be universal...at best it could prevent 9 out of 10 cancers, if it even proves to be that efficacious against those 90% of cancers with the MUC-1 protein. Even that seems unlikely, in a small pilot study the drug put 3 out of 10 patients with multiple myelomas into remission. That's promising, but unlikely to be the panacea the media are hyping it up to be.

It sounds nice but don't hold your breath. What baffles me is why people won't follow a few simple steps that would eliminate 95% of cancers to begin with...........eat sensible balanced meals, get lots of exercise, avoid noxious substances, smoke, drink and fornicate in moderation.

I figured most people would automatically know why and I certainly don't want to offend anyone but it's been said that woman who have multiple partners are at greater risk of developing cancer of the cervix.

Regardless of how true that is, the advice is good in that when you get over tired your immune system is compromised. LOL

Well, yeah. The more partners you have, the more chances you have of acquiring HPV. It's like the more times you throw a ball ata a catcher, the more chances you have of the ball going over the plate.

and there are over 40 types of HPV and only a few are linked to an increase chance of some cancers.

It's more a matter of knowing your partners. If you want to eliminate the chances of catching a sexually transmitted HPV, then remain abstinent.

Common sense at one time, told us that the planet was flat and tomatoes were poisonous.

Actually it was more accurately the stupidity of the ruling masses, like today, but UNLIKE today if you disagreed with them, you stood a good chance of going on the bonfire!
