Strange little news report out of Australia I came across. The guy may be a thief but I gotta say I have some respect for him.

Thief turns in stolen phone full of child porn
By QMI Agency

He may be a thief, but he's no perv.

An Australian man who stole a wallet and two cellphones turned himself in to police when he discovered child porn photos on one of the phones.

The unidentified man from Ballarat, about 100 km northwest of Melbourne, lifted the items from a supermarket parking lot in October, reports the Ballarat Courier. He was already facing a charge of theft of a vehicle.

Despite the risk of being charged with theft, the man gave himself up to help police catch a sexual offender. Police subsequently arrested a 46-year-old man on child porn charges.

The thief pleaded guilty to seven charges, including an earlier car theft charge, said the paper.

Judge Michelle Hodgson said the thief was to be commended for his conduct, but that didn't stop her from sentencing him to one month in jail and a $400 fine.

There is honour among thieves in some cases I guess. That was Australia but what
would have happened here? In Canada it would take us two years to get the guy to
court, they would investigate the perv for another year and time would run out to put
him away.
Under the circumstances the guy did the right thing and that is what counts

Unless the dood had sneaked into Canada. In which case it'd take the CIC a couple decades to get him out.

Yup.

The guy didn't have to turn himself in. All he had to do was send the phone anonymously to the police. Which either makes what he did incredibly dumb or incredibly conscientious.

I respect what he did(turning in a phone with child porn on it), but I still don't respect the thief himself.

No, I don't respect thieving either. But it's kind of nice to see that bit of humanity and decency in a human being that most of us would disregard as having any due to his thievery. In some strange way I find it kind of hopeful.

Well, in the grand scheme of things I guess it's better to be a thief than a child molester, so I at least wouldn't want him to suffer as much.

Yes, he stepped up and did the right thing. And he didn't get off scott free either, he received some penalty for his action.

Generally we all have this tendency to lump people into a good or bad category based on their actions, that's natural I guess and I do that as well. But I've always kind of thought that it's not the mistakes we make that define our character but how we deal with our mistakes that defines us. I guess in some small, anecdotal kind of way how this guy accepted the consequences for his actions in order to prevent further harm from coming to children just made a bit of an impression on me.

I still wouldn't trust him around my cell phone though, lol.

He did the right thing - He knew he was going to jail. Damn we have ignorant people that cannot even apologize and yet this fellow mans up, did the right thing - He should be commended for that act. Not condemned because he is a thief. That was how this pedophile was caught. A thief caught him.
Now how many other pedos will also be caught from having his phone, computer searched. I would hazard at least a few more freaks will be charged.

I would buy the man a beer and supper anytime.

I would also look at if this was a one-time thing, or if the man was a habitual thief. If it was the first time, then sure he deserves a second chance(after serving his time), but if he continually steals stuff then I wouldn't treat him to supper and a beer.;)

I would just because he caught a disgusting form of life. And I would then question why he was always stealing. Never know what you will find out.

Honestly, I wouldn't care why he was continually stealing. Lots of people have hard lives, and they don't all become thieves.

True, but I would invest the few dollars to ask why. While monkeys have more fun than people, people are more interesting.

I'd say this guy has a touch more class than your average Reality TV show contestant.

But I may be biased because I really, really hate Reality TV shows, lol.

I would rather talk to this thief than any of the brain-dead buffoons from Jersey Shore, that is for sure!

Maybe because he's shown the slightest capacity to think of someone other than himself? Sight unseen and a known thief, I'd still rank him above Snooki, lol.
