An Ontario couple has come forward to say the husband was attacked at the same 5 Star resort. No Police even came to speak with them.

In both cases there does not seem to be any provocation or reason.

I never understood why anybody would spend all that money to go to a foreign country to stay in a place that looks like their own country. When I have gone to foreign lands it was to learn of the culture from the people who live there and the only way to do that is to live like they do. Most tourists are flaunting their wealth in poor countries so they can brag to their friends about how much money they have to squander. Somebody should beat them up.

You got that right. Why is it, the wealthier people become the more ignorant they become?

When you measure wealth by the amount of money you can accumulate, you miss the whole point of life. That to me is the epitome of ignorance.

5 Star Hotels in Mexico are nothing like 5 Star Hotels here. It's not like staying in a place that looks like home at all - nothing is really the same except that it's the highest quality hotel that one can find in a place like Mexico. When traveling with children, a 5 star or all-inclusive hotel makes life much simpler if only because the simple task of feeding children is not a hassle. When staying in one hotel where a clean bed and decent food is guaranteed, it's then possible to take day or overnight trips to other locations. I've travelled through Mexico by crazy bus with porn on the TV screen, arrived in small towns where the only place to rent is a cockroach infested dive without toilet seats that costs $100/night and scrounged around for a "clean" place to eat. Traveling like a backpacking youth is a great experience some of the time. In fact, I was there one year when a bridge had been blown up by locals so we were stuck on the side of the road for hours. The upside was that an ice cream truck was right in front of us, so the driver opened up the back of the truck and handed out ice cream until the bus driver had a solution.

That is completely unreasonable Cliffy. I don't think anyone goes to Mexico to see Canada. Most go to get a break from our cold Winter weather, spend some time on a beach etc. For that, they deserve to be beaten? I would think intelligent Mexicans value tourism and the money it brings into their economy.

I know why Canadians go to Mexico. What they do is take advantage of the disadvantaged. They go there precisely because it is cheap and it is cheap because the people are beyond poor (as it is experienced in Canada). It takes two weeks to get acclimatized to Mexican weather and another two weeks to get re-acclimatized to Canadian weather when they return. The cost in both money and health (they usually get burnt to a crisp upon arrival and Montezuma's revenge too) is a silly price to pay for stroking the ego.

You mean $10 right?

Because there is No Such Place that costs $100.

I've been attacked in Mexico too-by some bloodsucking bugs hiding in the grass down in Yaxchilan.

No Cliffy, you don't have any idea why Canadians go to Mexico and it is not all that bloody cheap. We sure as hell don't go to take
advantage of anyone. We leave that to their corrupt government. Pure and simple we go to Mexico for the warm weather and sandy beaches. The same warm weather and beaches can be found in Belize without getting assaulted in your hotel.

They do, but there's also a hugh misperception that Canadians are all extremely wealthy and a bit stupid. We are not. We save for a vacation and choose a place that we think will be safe and affordable. We all know that Mexico is cheap and that it is a bit lawless ... that when Canadians are murdered, we hear unusual stories about them falling over railings (Canadians only do this in Mexico) or that the Canadian female doctor from Saskatchewan murdered the couple from Toronto. Crime scenes are quickly washed away so as not to inform tourists of what happened ... that's more important to those "intelligent" Mexicans than solving the crrime. We think that the 5 star hotel will be safer than the dive down the street so we pay a little extra to stay there. Mexicans, in turn, think we have money to throw around, that $10 or $100 is nothing for us, and they believe that if they can give us some useless trinket for some ridiculous price ... everyone is happy. I think that Canadians should look to other inexpensive travel destinations rather than go to a place that cares more about the tourist dollar than the tourist.

I enjoy the radish festival in Oaxaca, day of the dead, seafood, ocean swimming, snorkling, Mayan history, archeological sites, art ... that's why I've been to Mexico ... not to take advantage of the people of Mexico. It doesn't take time to get used to the slow pace in Mexico ... as soon as you get off the plane you have no choice. It takes only a day of being home to get used to the faster pace in Canada (which is still much slower than Europe). No one gets sick unless they eat the wrong foods.

I think you need to take a trip to Mexico to see what it's all about. I would recommend a 3 star place, rather than a 5 star. You will still have the benefit of smelling the sewer and enjoying life in Mexico, just no food or drinks included in the price ... you won't get sick as long as you don't drink the water or eat raw food (like lettuce) ... and ... just like travel safety rules in any foreign country ... don't get pissed in public.
