A Chinese scientist has been sentenced to more than seven years in prison in the US state of Indiana for stealing trade secrets of major US agribusiness firms.

Forty-six-year-old Huang Kexue was found guilty of stealing secrets on organic insecticides from Dow AgroSciences, where he had worked from 2003-2008.

He is alleged to have handed the information to researchers at the Hunan Normal University, in China.

In handing down the sentence, US District Court Judge William Lawrence, said that economic espionage were serious crimes and protecting trade secrets were vital to the US's economic success.
