American actor Robert Downey Jr is starring in a new British movie about Sherlock Holmes.

The actor plays the world's most famous detective and British actor Jude Law plays his trusty sidekick Dr Watson.

Robery Downey Jr is one of only a few Americans in the film. It is directed by Guy Ritchie.

These are the first pictures from the big screen adaptation of the Sherlock Holmes novels.

In his bowler hat and smoking jacket Robert Downey Jr has stepped back in time and into the role of the popular detective.

Guy Ritchie, who directs the movie, joined Downey on location in London today for the first day of filming.

At one stage the two headed into Starbucks for a coffee before waiting for filming to restart.

Downey's look in the film is reminiscent of his role as another British icon - Charlie Chaplin in the 1992 film Chaplin, for which he received an Oscar nomination.

Downey is one of the few Americans in the film, starring alongside Jude Law as Dr Watson.

But Kelly Ruth, who plays Watson's girlfriend Mary says his accent is spot on.

'At the cast read-through, Robert's British accent was so good as Sherlock I remember thinking: "He's got a Brit inside him, that man,"' she said.

Mark Strong plays the 'baddie' in the film, while Rachel McAdam has the main female part of Irene Adler, who enjoys a tempestuous relationship with the detective from Baker Street.

Eddie Marsan, James Fox and Hans Matheson are also in the film.
