I love westerns, and I don't know if this counts, but I have the complete
lonesome dove mini series, and we watch it in it's entirety at least every
two years.
I love it. I have the tv series as well, but mini series group was better.
And, many others.
Big Country, Gregory Peck
Unforgiven, Clint Eastwood, and I could go on and on.

I like all of the above, and how about' GIANT', with elizabeth taylor, rock hudson,
and james dean, a blockbuster, filmed in texas.
Shendanoah,(jimmy stewart), Red River, (John Wayne, Montgomery Cliff), they
are old but very good.
How about Open Range, Robert Duval, Keven Costner) a new one, and very good.

I think that's my wife's favourite, I think mine was "Ice Palace"- Robert Ryan and Richard Burton, second would be Big Country with Gregory Peck. (I guess "Ice Palace" would qualify as a western.)

I loved the Lonesome Dove tv series, I mentioned this to a co-worker once, since he lived in Bragg Creek near where it was filmed and he showed me pictures of himself on the set, he worked there part time as a wrangler, (and says he appeared as an extra as well but this was after the series ended and I haven't seen an episode since to verify it), but no, I'm not jealous . The buildings weren't facades, they were the actual locations, the inside shots weren't filmed on a sound stage.

I love a good duster, The Outlaw Josey Wales and High Noon immediately come to mind, but there are so many others.

All the westerns directed by Anthony Mann (usually starring James Stewart): Winchester 73, Bend of the River, The Naked Spur, The Far Country, The Man From Laramie. Not as well known as some others but all excellent.

James Stewart was excellent in his westerns, so convincing and natural.
And clint eastwood too, but don't like the spghetti westerns, the music
and the staring get to me, but clint is clint, no one better.

Tombstone - best western ever, bar none. Saw it at least six times. Val Kilmor as Doc Holiday was brilliant.

Unforgiven, The Good The Bad and The Ugly, Hang 'em High, A Fistful of Dollars, The Outlaw Josey Wales, Pale Rider. All great movies that I enjoy a lot.

How come no one has mentioned Young Guns?

Yes, there were two Young Guns movies. I thought they were entertaining movies, but they were not classics like the ones mentioned in the thread so far.

A while back I picked up a couple of multi-packs from Wal-Mart that contained a bunch of Western movies(I got them both for $10!)

The movies in the first pack are:

1. Pancho Villa
2. Navajo Joe
3. A Town Called Hell
4. Eagle's Wing

In the second pack there was:

1. Beyond The Law
2. Death Rides A Horse
3. God's Gun
4. Cry Blood Apache

I have yet to see them yet, so I do not know if they are any good or not. However, 8 movies for $10 is a pretty good deal!

I just got to thinking nobody has mentioned "North to Alaska"- surely that has to be one of the greatest westerns of all times.

The Outlaw Josey Wales is a great one...........I myself constantly 'endeavour to persevere", as Dan George's tribe was instructed to do.......

Lately? Open Range was a good one.......Robert Duvall carried a Remington single action revolver in that one.......interesting

The re-make of 3:10 to Yuma was okay, what-iz-name plays a evil, evil man so well.........Spencer rifles and S&W Schofield revolvers in that one.....

The modern ones, oddly enough, seem to have moved away from the standard Colt SAA and Winchester. I like that.

You know you're a gun nut when.......

Not familiar to me, except Pancho Villa, wonder if that is the one with
Marlin Brando, when he was young, and very handsome, good movie.
He was also is one when he was old, forgot the name, but it was also good.
Maybe someone knows the title.
Just watched 'ride with the devil' the other night, good movie, but a weak
ending, forget the stars name, but he is a good actor, quite new, oh, I
know, Toby McGuire.

Johnson county war was an excellent movie, based on a true story.

I looked on the back of the DVD case, and checked IMDB, and he was not listed on either one. It has Telly Savalas in it, perhaps that was who you were thinking of?

I just don't understand why hollywood can't make westerns these days as good as some of those mentioned in this thread. I love the old westerns.

Probably because the tastes have changed with regards to the viewing public. I am not saying it's a good thing(as there are a LOT of crappy movies, and a LOT of remakes), but that is just the way it is.

All Quiet on The Western Front. I hate westerns except when the injuns massacre everyone of the dirt farmers right down to the cattle. No movie genre is more full of **** than the American western.

Exactly, the problem being, John Wayne, Randolf Scott, Glenn Ford, Burt Lancaster aren't around anymore and Clint Eastwood although he's not bad, isn't great. Oh, can't forget Jimmy Stewart.

Try to watch the complete collection of 'Into the West', it gives a very good
review of the attack at 'wounded knee', it is a long mini series, and lets us
all know of the miserable behavior of the white men, at that time and place.
It is done in a realistic manner, complete with the native language, and
lifestyle, and I will watch it over, every year or so.
the lakota indian.
