Here are my best bands of all time. What does everyone else think are the best 5 bands of all time?

1) The Beatles
The Beatles are, without doubt, the best band of all time. They are the best-selling musical act of all time in the United States and in 2004, Rolling Stone magazine ranked The Beatles #1 on its list of 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. They personified the cool culture of 1960s Britain, such as Swinging London. The Beatles broke a number of world record, many of which are yet to be broken. For example, they are the best selling musical act of all time, with an incredible one billion discs and tapes sold worlwide. They've also notched up the most multi-platinum selling albums for any artist or musical group (thirteen in the U.S. alone). They also have the fastest selling single of all time with "I Want to Hold Your Hand". The song sold 250,000 units within three days in the U.S., one million in 2 weeks. (Additionally, it sold 10,000 copies per hour in New York City alone for the first 20 days.)

2) The Rolling Stones
A band that made cool tunes and, unlike the Beatles (sadly), are still around. The band have released 55 albums of original work and compilations, and have had 32 U.K & U.S top-10 singles. They have sold more than 200 million albums worldwide. Again, personify Swinging London of the 1960s.

3) Black Sabbath
Formed in 1968 and are still with us. With his heavy Birmingham accent and his eccentricity, Ozzy Osbourne is hard to miss. Often tended to make dark, heavy-metal music. Black Sabbath remain a dominant influence in the heavy metal genre they helped create. VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock ranks them second, behind Led Zeppelin.

4) Led Zeppelin.
Regarded as one of the world's first heavy metal bands, they hail one West Bromwich, near Birmingham, in Britain. They often incorporated several genres into their music, such as reggae, folk, soul, jazz, classical, Celtic, Indian, Arabic, folk, pop, Latin and country. They have sold over 300 million albums worldwide, including 110 million in the US alone. They are also the only band in the world to have had ALL their albums reach the US Billboard Top 10.

5) The Who
Famed for their prowess as a live band - even being described as "possibly the greatest live band ever." Had a tendency to smash up hotel rooms and drive cars into swimming pools. From 1969 the band released a series of Top 5 albums in the US.

The only change I would make to the first list is swapping out Black Sabbath for U2.

It seems that the criteria for this is mixed up some. IF it's album sales then it's a difficult selection. But immediatly I see Elvis has been left off the list. He's a big as the Beatles in sales though that's a bit sketchy as a measure. You would have to include Michael Jackson in there then too along with Frank Sinatra.

Personal taste is subjective and so the wide variation on such a narrow field we see here is suspect. Who would be compared to Bach or Mozart? As well where do Robert Johnson, Son House stack up?

Plus there are bands and musicians we've never even heard of who are probably more popular in China or India than any from the west. Maybe not as famous but I bet the get more play there.

At the moment I like Floyd from the Meddle age to The Final Cut.
Some Led Zep.
Old Rush up to Signals
Neil Young
Ry Cooder

Though this could be interchangeable with a number of others on any given week. Mood and what I'm working on has a lot to do with that.

Oh say.... You wanna go personal....

Theee greatest music that was ever played in my home came in those evenings Brian would sit in on drums while Nick and I just loose-jammed something ... and one of us would go to the mike....

Well, The Police, and the Beatles I suppose, maybe. My taste in music is so wide I have a hard time picking bands. How about artists? Bobby Darin at his best. Little Richard, Nana Mouskouri, Joan Bias, Louise Armstrong, and hundreds of others....

If it's sales that are the measuring stick, then ABBA and the BeeGees would top the list.

Both are quite good but don't rate with the Beatles, Stones, LedZep, Who, & Pink Floyd as far as I am concerned.
