Left To Right, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby and Dean Martin

Crooner is an epithet given to a male singer of a certain style of popular songs, dubbed pop standards. A crooner is a singer of popular ballads thus a "balladeer". The singer is normally backed by a full orchestra or big band. Generally, crooners sang and popularized the songs from the Great American Songbook. Crooner was originally bestowed as a negative term, and many people given the term, such as Russ Colombo, did not consider themselves to be crooners. In an interview, Frank Sinatra said that he did not consider himself or Bing Crosby to be crooners.

Out of the 3, it'd be Deano.
Out of all of them, I could give a list of faves but not one single fave.
McCartney a crooner? Oh, I see. My favorite choir is Pink Floyd. ;) Or maybe Jethro Tull.

Well, as someone who sings ballads..yeah, McCartney easily.Actually Lennon had a great voice for ballads too.And the two of them together singing a ballad...heaven:)

Can't forget Gene Pitney. First album I ever bought. He died in the last year. Still on tour. Magnificent voice and some songs that remain lyrical favourites.

Ooh! Ooh! Gene Pitney! "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" "24 Hours from Tulsa." "Only Love Can Break a Heart" "It Hurts to be in Love." "Town Without Pity." Some of the great songs of my foolish youth. I still listen to 'em and weep. Not because the songs are uniquely beautiful, but for my foolish youth long gone... I knew nothing, and thought I knew everything. It was fun. :)

I wouldn't call him a crooner though. That still sounds vaguely insulting to me: boring, no-talent dickweeds who bumble their way through songs they don't understand, like Madonna doing Don McClean's classic "American Pie." Ever seen that video? Appalling. So it can't apply to anyone I like even a little bit. Sinatra, no. Dean Martin, no. Lennon and McCartney, no. Bing Crosby, no. Sammy Davis Jr.... uh, borderline, he hollered a lot rather than singing, but probably no.

But Frank Ifield? Yes, definitely a lounge lizard, a crooner with a tolerable voice and a horrible choice of material. "When my life is through/And the angels ask me to recall/The thrill of them all/I will tell them I remember you." :pukeright:

Bing and Dean were crooners, but Frank was a "singer' and much better than both of them.

Paul McCartney wrote beautiful songs, and I love them, but don't think he has the greatest voice, but
I do enjoy him.

I guess you'd have to say McCartney is the most talented, as he writes, and sings. The others only sang.

I can't listen to Bing any more, too boring, Dean is OK, but I will never get tired of Frank as he sang so
well, and could "present" a song better than most other singers.

Dexter, Pitney was fabulous. I can still remember being in a tent some place in the 60's and hearing a radio outside in the starlit stillness: "In the eyes of the world..."
Gosh, memories.
Dunno if he's a crooner but he's definitely not if crooners are run-of-the-mill!

Bing Crosby, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, were the top "pop" singers many years ago, they are all

dead now. I'm sure you must know who Paul McCartney is.
