HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) - William Shatner, best known as Capt. James T. Kirk to legions of "Star Trek" fans, will be beaming down for a party celebrating the 25th anniversary of the U.S. Space Camp.

The 75-year-old Canadian-born and raised Shatner, who currently stars in the TV series "Boston Legal," has agreed to be the master of ceremonies for the Space Camp Hall of Fame induction banquet in June, said Larry Capps, CEO of the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in a story published in the Huntsville Times newspaper Monday. The event will honour 10 people who either attended Space Camp or have been major supporters of the program.

A committee is establishing criteria for selecting the first group of inductees. The exact date and location of the banquet will be announced later, he said.

Huntsville became a centre in the research, development and production of missiles and rockets when U.S. Senator John Sparkman, who lived in the Alabama city, brought in a band of German rocket scientists led by Wernher von Braun to work at the U.S. army's Redstone Arsenal in 1950.

The Space Camp, which is part of the U.S. Space & Rocket Center museum complex, offers young people from throughout the world a chance to experience space flight training and participate in mock space missions.
