Ayn Rand wrote some of the greatest fantasies of the post industrial society. The idea that the capitalist through capitalism can achieve peace stability and moral substance is wonderful as an idea, but it fails to find even an iota of realization in modern society. Instead of the altruism of an honest days pay for an honest days labor, we have minimum wage and a system of sweatshops and two tier citizenship in which the gap between wealth and poverty continues to deepen and widen. A good read but definitely at odds with the reality of modern industry and entrepreneurialship....

Come on Mikey

We don't all get minimum wage. The reality is, that we all don't have the skills and education to earn top dollars, but with hard work and perseverance most of us can buy a home and set aside a modest nest egg to retire on.

We don't have "a system of sweat shops" in this country. Not to say there aren't inequities but generally, people are paid what the market will bear.

The alternative is just as goofy, too. Lookit the span between the peasants and the top brass in China, for instance. I happen to know a very good internist from Russia (actually Belarus) who moved over here and the first thing he did was get a job, the second thing was get a car loan because he'd never even been in one let alone own one.

Um, JK Galbraith (I think) once said, "Under capitalism, man exploits man. Under communism (a form of socialism), it's the reverse". Or something to that effect.
There must be a decent balance between them somewhere. Trouble is that with the pols we have running things, the rich continue to get richer and the poor, poorer; as Mikey said.

And having said that Gilbert, it is possible for everyone with the intelligence and desire to get a decent education, and with that education, gain decent employment. There will always be the Poor
