'Brokeback Mountain' to dominate Golden Globes

Cowboy romance 'Brokeback Mountain' is set to dominate the Golden Globe Awards in Los Angeles tonight.

'Brokeback', which has already won three Critics' Choice Awards, is shortlisted for best drama, with nominations for director Ang Lee and actor Heath Ledger among the seven nods.

"It's pretty well got a lock on several of (the categories)," entertainment journalist Michael Rechtshaffen of The Hollywood Reporter told Canada AM on Monday, noting that despite sweeping the nominations, none went to co-star Jake Gyllenhaal.

"Unfortunately… Gyllenhaal didn't get a nomination here… I have to say that I thought Jake was good. He could show up in the Oscars."

A Globes win is seen as a good indication of success in the upcoming Oscars, Rechtshaffen said.

"It's been predicting the Oscars by… about an 80 per cent average," he said, adding the success of 'Brokeback' is an indication of the trend moving away from big-budget Hollywood films.

"The top five dramatic films were all made… for under $30 million, so I think it's really a message to Hollywood saying… we're not impressed by these great big studio movies, Rechtshaffen said.

Stars Keira Knightley, Reese Witherspoon and Dame Judi Dench compete for best actress in a musical or comedy, while Gwyneth Paltrow, Felicity Huffman and Charlize Theron go head-to-head for best actress in a drama.

'The Constant Gardener' is up against 'Brokeback Mountain', George Clooney's 'Good Night and Good Luck', Woody Allen's 'Match Point' and David Cronenberg's 'A History of Violence' in the best dramatic movie category.

Canadian Cronenberg insists he's not bothered that he didn't make the cut in the best director category.

"It's always been this way," Cronenberg said in a telephone interview with The Canadian Press from Los Angeles. "There are some strange voting systems. Each group has its own weird system of voting."

Ang Lee, George Clooney, Woody Allen, Peter Jackson, Steven Spielberg and 'The Constant Gardener's' Fernando Meirelles are shortlisted in the best director category.

'Pride and Prejudice' goes head-to-head with 'Mrs. Henderson Presents,' Johnny Cash biopic 'Walk the Line,' 'The Producers' and 'The Squid and the Whale' for best musical or comedy.

Meanwhile, Russell Crowe gained his fifth Golden Globe nomination for best actor in a drama for his performance in 'Cinderella Man.'

He faces competition from Heath Ledger, Philip Seymour Hoffman in 'Capote,' David Straithairn in 'Good Night and Good Luck' and Terrence Howard in 'Hustle and Flow.'

The Golden Globes are given by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), a group of Los Angeles-based journalists working for overseas publications.

And the event sends home more than just its signature statuettes.

Award presenters leave with a loot bag worth tens of thousands of dollars, containing vacation vouchers for Tasmania, Antarctica and Yellowknife, a diamond ring and even a $300 vacuum.

The ceremony will be take place at the Beverly Hilton hotel, Los Angeles, starting at 1700 PT (2000 ET). It will be broadcast live on CTV.

I think its time has come....

That people should see alternative lifestyles for what they are in the majority.

We are shown so many extreme visions of homosexuality of both genders, we don't realize there are many homosexual people living quietly, in love, experiencing "couple problems" like the rest of us do...and for the majority they don't plan the overthrow of heterosexual love.... but are finding love where it most suits them
personally.

If the visual image of homosexuality can be explored for the rest of us, in terms with which we can identify, we may be less harsh in
our outspoken criticism (or the more silent gossipy, joking kind)...

Cowboys, teachers, priests and nuns (yes), athletes, trades people, retail people, attorneys, designers, musicians, artists, programmers, IT specialists, doctors, and the whole spectrum of workforce employees may be homosexual....and people who fall in love....

I for one am tired of cartoon image...and I hope this picture will open some eyes, minds, and hearts too. A couple of journalist friends went with my three gay guy neighbors....and they spent at least a couple of hours after discussing all the questions which were never asked...all the misinformation which had never been checked...and I call that a great event for a movie to create the
atmosphere of understanding.

I hope others will come away with new thoughts...
