Anyone have a favorite poet, mine change all the time, there are so many great ones. Right now I am enjoying australian ones. There is one in particular that I really enjoy. Here is one of her poems.

He sneezed; she laughed

He smiled, and she smiled back,
He spoke, and she listened closely,
He nodded, and her head moved too,
He sneezed, and she loved him again.

She pottered, and he looked on,
She sang, and he hummed along,
She glanced, and he melted inside,
She laughed, and he loved her again.

Got any favorites?

Well my impression of it is that its about love, and how they both recall all the little things about each other that they love about each other. Welcome winter snow. Do they have poetry in china?

Love is:

Love is the most powerful force in the universe.
It wounds and heals;
Divides and unites;
Poisons and blossoms;
Strangles and breathes;
Love is the lung capacity of our souls.

As I look now,
I see a mountain top.
On it's peak, I see you glittering in gold.
Like a newborn lamb exploding in the light of dawn.
Several times I have grasped the torch and attempted to climb;
But, stumbled and fell.
If you were to grasp the torch with me,
I'm sure we could make it together.

Wintersnow (I love you name) you now have me interested in chinese poets. There are many :) I have been reading them on the internet. This one I like alot, it is translated, but since I fish alot, I like this poem alot. :wink: It is done by a Liu Zongyaun

A fisherman spends the night under West Rock,
pails clear river water and burns bamboo.

Smoke vanishes, sun rises and no one is seen.

The oar-sound turns mountains and water green.

Floating the central current, he turns to gaze at sky
above rock where mindless clouds chase each other

No poet can hold a candle to Shel Silverstein.

Early Bird

Oh, if you're a bird, be an early bird
And catch the worm for your breakfast plate.
If you're a bird be an early early bird -
But if you're a worm, sleep late.

Hug O' War

I will not play at tug o' war.
I'd rather play at hug o' war,
Where everyone hugs Instead of tugs,
Where everyone giggles
And rolls on the rug,
Where everyone kisses,
And everyone grins,
And everyone cuddles,
And everyone wins.

oops - editted for a spello. :oops:

hi, peapod, im very surprised to know that you are reading Liu Zongyuan (a renowned poet of Tang Dynasty) , the poem you quoted is an impressive one.

I am a poetry lover too. :) But i have shifted to the western poetry these years and read some of the British and American works. I prefer a poem by Yeats , Irish poet. When You Are Old. Do you enjoy it?

I will search around and try to offer some good works for your apprecation later.

Wintersnow I never really thought or looked into chinese poets until you mentioned it. I googled chinese poets and poetry. There are many! And they are wonderful. I really really like the fishing and nature ones 8) Thanks for bringing it up. This poetry thread is a good one, poetry is like music a universal language. :wink: Right now I am very fond of a australian poet I have found. Here is another of her poems.

Marmalade defies rationality

Sly, smiling breakfast man,
your fresh familiarity
defies rationality.
How can tea and toast
ignite a passion
that abandons cups and plates
on cluttered kitchen counters?

Decade by decade,
this reliable loveliness
is held before me --
astonishing me
with its familiar treasures.

Today, this tangy marmalade devotion
starts my day afresh,
and life's stormy desire
tramples up the stairs;
love's thunderous clamour
batters at the door.

Wintersnow, I am becoming very fond of the chinese poet, they are translated but the meaning comes threw. They have alot of poetry about nature which I enjoy very much. You should read some walt witman, a great american poet. I really enjoyed reading this translation of a poem by Li Yu

Angler

Foamy tides, like snow-drifts, lingering;

A battalion of plum trees silently blooming;

A bottle of wine

And a fishing line;

Who in this world is my equal?

The oar rips apart the spring water

On which the leaf-like boat is floating.

A tiny hook dangles

At the end of a silk cord.

The islet is covered with blossoms

And my jug is full of wine.

Upon these thousand acres of waves there is freedom.
