The stars of hit prison drama Orange is the New Black have apologized to Monica Lewinsky over an onscreen joke about the former White House intern.

The gag featured a crude reference to her affair with former U.S. President Bill Clinton, and Lewinsky, who is a big fan of the show, revealed how it upset her in a new column for Vanity Fair magazine.

She writes, "I did what I usually do in these situations where the culture throws me a shard of my former self. After the cringing embarrassment, the whiff of shame, and the sense that I am no longer an agent running my own life, I shuddered, I got up off the sofa, and I turned it off."

Orange Is The New Black star Taylor Schilling has now said sorry for the jibe, telling E! Online, "I apologize, Monica Lewinsky, for the show - honestly. If you were offended, nobody wants to offend anyone."

Kate Mulgrew, who also appears in the series, adds, "I think if you've been subject to everything that she's been subjected to, you'd be sensitive about that, too."

She mentioned she turned it off. But since it was only a single line and it would have been heard well before reaction time could be acted on it would have been impossible to turn it off before it was said and heard.

I can only imagine what it would be like to be ridiculed and made fun off constantly for a mistake I made while I was young. Never having had to deal with anything on a scale like she's had to, I can only imagine I would feel devastated and humiliated. It would be hard to shrug off and raise my head above it.

just wonder wtf the crude reference was... the devil's in the details.

the mistake she made was not in the sexual act itself, but rather in the divulging of it to a so-called friend and then expecting (I suppose) that friendship/confidentiality would last forever, or perhaps that if word went any further that the ramifications would not follow her around for the rest of her life. the lesson? some sh!t you don't even tell to your friends. suck it up, princess (heh heh), and move on.

now, orange you glad you came?
