The BBC has unveiled the costume for the 12th Doctor Who, Peter Capaldi.

Sporting a dark blue Crombie coat with red lining, dark blue trousers, a white shirt as well as black Dr Marten shoes, the look was created by Doctor Who costume designer Howard Burden.

Lifelong Dr Who fan Capaldi, a 55-year-old Glaswegian who made his first appearance as the Timelord in the Christmas Day special, which was also the 800th episode of the show, said: 'He's woven the future from the cloth of the past. Simple, stark, and back to basics.'

The unveiling of a new Doctor's costume is one of the highlights for any Doctor Who fan.

Capaldi is only the second actor to be cast as the Doctor after having made a previous appearance in the series as a different character, after Colin Baker, who went on to play the Sixth Doctor after appearing as Commander Maxil in the 1983 serial Arc of Infinity. Capaldi first appeared as Caecilius in "The Fires of Pompeii" - the same episode in which fellow Scot Karen Gillan appeared before being cast as the Eleventh Doctor's companion Amy Pond.

Filming for episode one of the 33rd series of the sci-fi, which celebrated its 50th birthday last year, began earlier this month, with the series coming to our screens in the autumn.

New Doctor, new look: Peter Capaldi - the new, Twelfth Doctor - in costume

Where Matt Smith's Doctor had his bow tie, and Tom Baker had the scarf, the latest regeneration of the famous time lord could yet be defined by his dark Crombie coat.

New Dr Who star Peter Capaldi, famed for his role as The Thick Of It's foul-mouthed Malcolm Tucker, became the 12th Doctor during the long-running BBC television series' Christmas Day special.

And BBC bosses have now released the first picture of Capaldi's character, in full Time Lord get-up - no doubt much to the delight of fans and fancy dress aficionados.

Sporting a dark blue Crombie coat with red lining, dark blue trousers, a white shirt as well as black Dr Marten shoes, the look was created by Doctor Who costume designer Howard Burden.

The end of the 2013 Christmas Day episode - the 800th episode - saw Matt Smith's Eleventh Doctor regenerate into Peter Capaldi's Twelfth Doctor in the Tardis, with the episode ending just after the confused new Doctor admitted to companion Clara Oswald he has no idea how to operate the Tardis

Scottish actor Capaldi currently stars as the evil Cardinal Richelieu in the new BBC historical drama The Musketeers. He found out he was the new Doctor whilst filming the series

Lifelong Dr Who fan Capaldi said: 'He's woven the future from the cloth of the past. Simple, stark, and back to basics.

'No frills, no scarf, no messing, just 100% rebel time lord'

Dr Who boss Steven Moffat said the new era meant for a new outfit.

He said: 'Monsters of the universe, the vacation is over - Capaldi is suited and booted and coming to get you'.

Filming for episode one of the new series began earlier this month, after 10.2 million tuned-in on Christmas Day to get their first much-anticipated glimpse of Capaldi's Doctor.

Charlotte Moore, controller of BBC One, said: 'Peter Capaldi's Doctor is officially recorded in history today with the unveiling of his new costume. It's sharp, smart and stylish - The 12th time lord means business.'

I loooove making a post twice due to the first one not showing up for some reason.

Anyhoo, as I mentioned in my first post, I happen to enjoy watching Doctor Who (I have watched both the classic series and the new series). The special effects are far better than I expected, and some of the episodes are quite dark.

My daughter and I love Dr. Who. Although, I will say I was a bigger Torchwood fan then Dr. Who...I wish they'd bring back Torchwood.
