GSM 900/1800 ?

hihi,

does anyone know which (if any) service provider supports GSM 900 or GSM 1800? i am in the GTA area. i have a phone that is only GSM 900/1800 and was wondering if i could use it here...

In North America, we use 2 GSM frequencies, 850mhz* and !900mhz.
900 and 1800 mhz are used in most of the rest of the world, but mainly europe and asia.


*850mhz only available for Rogers customers and for Fido rogers-roam-able customers only.

Rogers supports 850/1900 GSM. Does it matter if you phone can only do one or both? Will it switch to the better one?

well.. if the phone has 850mhz and 1900mhz.. your phone will still operate one at a time. It will stick to the stronger one.

However, if your phone has only 1900mhz ( I haven't seen a phone that has 850mhz but not the 1900mhz ). It will still work on the 1900mhz network, but not on the 850mhz. To perform the best of the best coverage, it is always suggested to have a phone with both 850 and 1900mhz.

We're still behind Japan and European phones. They're 2nd generation and we're 1.5 i believe. I dont realy understand that but I wanted to through my 2 cents in.

Analog : 1G
TDMA or CDMA : 2G
GSM/GPRS or 1X : 2.5G
WCDMA/EDGE or EX-VO : 3G

Rogers has now 2.5G for voice (GSM) and data(GPRS) and also 3G of data (EDGE)*also named as 2.75G.

Rogers has also planned to test out 3G voice (WCDMA, clearly... Video Calling) from 2005 to 2006, and expected to be launch in middle of 2006 (rumors that I heard from Rogers' Head Office in MTL)

So actually, we're not that behind comparing to europe/asia. We just need to have a bigger markets in Canada.

Japan.. can't compare to them anyways.
