A St. John's man who fell into an abandoned maggot-filled septic tank on a walk eventually edged his way out after praying to his dead father to not let him "die in this s---hole tonight."
The man didn't give his name, but gave a full account of his nauseating ordeal to the St. John's Telegram newspaper.
He said he can't swim and so barely kept from sinking in the eight-foot hole filled with slime, swimming with maggots and smelled of rotting meat.
He had made an impromptu decision to see if salmon were running at a favourite fishing hole and was walking back to his car when he slipped in, so he knew nobody would know where he was.
"I remember saying, 'Dad, please don't let me die in this s---hole tonight,'" he told The Telegram. "Whatever happened when I said that, I just came back to life."
He broke an arm falling in, but managed to cling to a broken pipe above that held his weight. From that, he was able to shimmy up and eventually swing his leg out.
He figures he was in the hole for about 15 minutes, some of that time completely submerged,
After washing the maggots from his body, he called his wife to pick him up and she took him to hospital.
He said he's since replaced the car seat due to the stink of rotten flesh.

His favorite salmon fishing hole is near a septic tank? I'm scratching my head over this one.
