PICTOU, N.S. -- Hydrographers have discovered what's believed to be an 83 metre long ship at the bottom of the harbour in Pictou, N.S.
The mystery vessel was found June 22 by members of the Canadian Hydrographic Service, which is surveying Pictou Harbour and its approaches under a program to upgrade many Canadian ports and harbours that haven't been surveyed in years.
Hydrographer Jon Griffen says finding the ship was a complete surprise to the sonar crew that found the wreckage sitting in about six metres of water.
The outline of the boat's bow and hull can be seen on the 3D images produced by the service's software.
Griffen can't tell how old the ship is or how long it has been on the bottom of the harbour, and he says there is no record of it in any previous surveys.
The Canadian Hydrographic Service will be in the area until mid-August and if it has time it plans to drop a camera near the wreckage to see if it can pick up images.
