HALIFAX - A Dutch dentist on the lam from cops in France has been arrested in a tiny town in New Brunswick.
Mark Van Nierop was wanted on international arrest warrants after it was alleged he mutilated patients' mouths in Château-Chinon-Ville in the Bourgogne region of France.
Patients speaking to Europe1 radio in July 2014 alleged he yanked out healthy teeth, pierced jaws and lodged broken tools in their gums.
This week it was discovered that Van Nierop was living in the hamlet of Nackawic, N.B., about 45 minutes west of Fredericton, and was arrested by Canadian authorities Monday.
"He met a local lady online and came over here to live with her, she cleans the mill in town," a local acquaintance told QMI Agency in a phone interview.
Townspeople are all talking about the big takedown of an international fugitive.
"We used to have drinks together quite often, he seemed like a normal guy, he was just European," another man told QMI Agency.
All foreign nationals arrested have deportation hearings via the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada.
Officials with the Canadian Border Service Agency or the RCMP would not comment.
