so i'm in the market for a new ride... I'm tempted by the new Toyota Matrix. Any thoughts?? The vibe looks cool too, 'cept I hear they're pretty much identical. I like the look of the trix better. It also seems like it has reasonable storage space for my hockey gear.

Storage space... that's why I'm going for the Dodge Journey next year I suspect. I can't go to the small cars, so I don't know nearly enough, sorry.

You won't go wrong with the Toyota Matrix, I think that'll be the next vehicle I buy, but what to get really depends on what's most important to you, and there's a lot to consider. Storage space for hockey gear, and appearance, are the only things we know matter to you so far. How about price, reliability, durability, reputation, performance, service (that depends a lot on the individual dealer), resale value, fuel economy,... Toyota, Honda, and Nissan, all do pretty well on those compared to Ford, GM, and Chrysler (can't say anything from experience about others like Kia and Hyundai), except for price, the Japanese brands tend to be a little pricier up front, but my experience is that you get what you pay for. I've owned only Toyotas for the last 20 years, and for quality, reliability, and durability--which are the things that matter most to me, I don't much care about cool--I've never seen anything to match them. They have never let me down, never stranded me, never failed me, and never cost me anything but standard maintenance items. Except for the time one of my children piled up my 1993 Camry, inexperienced driver on an icy road... But that's what insurance is for, it cost me just the $200 deductible.

Do some research, this is a big ticket item, and don't believe anything any sales person tells you. They aren't motivated by your needs or interests. Consumer Reports and Phil Edmonston's Lemon Aid guides are pretty good.

We have a 2005 Nissan Altima 4 cyl. very peppy lots of power and so easy on gas. Very
nice looking car, and it seems many think well of it, as they are on the road everywhere.
I've heard that this car has kept Nissan going for the past 3 years, cause sales were so high.

The matrix and the vibe are the same vehicle with some different body panels and such. If I understand correctly, the vibe is built in california, the martix in ontario.

We're going to seriously look at a Matrix to replace the 03 Corolla, because the Vibe is available with AWD, and my wife is jealous of how well my Outback handles the steep driveway in winter.

I tend to agree with Dexter. Toyotas just seem to go. Do the routine maintenance and you'll be driving it for the next ten years or however long you keep your car. I've had three Toyotas and I haven't a complaint about any of them. Seems to me Kreskin either has or had a Matrix.

If you're hooked onToyota and looking for a vehicle with lots of room and gas price is not an issue, I would recommend the Tundra. The double cab version makes a nice family vehicle, particularly for week-end trips to the cottage. Get a hard cover for the back or a camper shell, and you've got lots of room for the hockey gear as well.
