What about side effects like obesity, diabetes, hart attacks and strokes? I agree that most people should be able to get all the vitamins you need though a diet but it is not going to work for everyone.

Well, that's dumb. Of course we can get everything we need from the foods we eat. Avoid processed foods, limit animal fats, eat a wide assortment of foods, small amounts often (not just two big meals), and get off yer butt a couple of times a day. Better for you, and cheaper too.

Ask anyone who has lived past a hundred - with rare exceptions, that's how they did it.

Oh yeah, they tended to laugh a lot.

I don't know. A lot of people that lived past 100 lived quite unhealthy lives. Anyway my point is diet is not always enough. For instance a lot of girls are deficient in iron. A lot of older girls end up with osteoporosis. Some things may be correctable with diet but if we end up with a deficiency in some active ingredient why not address the problem directly?

No, a lot of people who lived past 100 did not live unhealthy lives. A few - there are always going to be those very few who process fats well, or are not affected by tobacco, or have some immunity to degenerative diseases.

Most of us, by definition, are average.

Wanna avoid iron defeciency? Eat as I suggested in my earlier post. Wanna avoid osteoporosis? Exercise - except for pathologies, osteo can be easily prevented by gently stressing your skeleton throughout your life.

Did you know that our body cannot absorb iron from vegetables. The iron in vegetables is bound. The only way we can get iron without supplements is to eat meet which is high in calories. I suppose most healthy people could burn the calories off with sufficient exerersize. Most people once they get past a certain age can't run 35 miles a week. If we can improve on nature why not.

Your arguments would carry more weight with me if you didn't include nonsense like we cannot absorb iron from vegetables.

Gee, so all of us vegetarians are dead, huh?

The Canadian Blood Service has been wrong every single one of the 300+ times they've tested my blood iron levels when I've gone in to donate?

The nurses are attempting murder when they tell someone who has blood iron levels that are too low to "go home and eat some oatmeal"? Not liver, not steak tartar - oatmeal.

Sorry s243a, but you're talkin' outta your bum on that one.

Who needs to run 35 miles a week? Walking burns the same number of calories per distance traveled - cycling is a no impact sport and is second only to swimming (also no impact) in terms of ease and intensity and metabolic acceleration.

We are meant to move. To stay healthy, move. You don't have to be an athlete, just mobile.

For the most part diet can do wonders. There are some of us who have genetic irregularities. I suffer from high cholesterol that needs diet, drugs and exercise to control. But for practically everyone who is not under a docs care for some types of issues this post is excellent. Sugar content in fruits can be quite high so diabetics may want to watch out. Again for 95% of the population fruits and whole grains are awesome. We all could stand to cut down on refined grains (white bread) and refined sugar, not to mention transfats and saturated fats. After having heart attack last year I am on a low fat no salt added diet. I eat whole grains, fruit and veggies alot. Shellfish and finfish along with skinless chicken breast are tops on my diet list too. I eat red meat about 3 times a months at most.

I'd like to add that seeing a good nutritionist is about as important as seeing your doctor. I've been learning about combinations of vegitables that augment and act as a catalyst for the benefits that other vegies provide. Theres a lot more to eating good food than you might think.

You got that right. My doctor sent me to one years ago and I lost about 50 pounds and felt like a new person. (I think I need to make another visit)

i dearly love the big mamaluke and wish him health...he needs a good kick in the behind though to get his arse in gear and do what he has been posting about for years.

If what someone posts is factually wrong, correct them. If someone's opinion is contrary to yours, gird your loins and do battle.

If you have irrelevant personal information that could be used to discredit a fellow poster - SIT ON YOUR HANDS AND RESIST THE URGE TO TYPE.

Of course, that's just my personal opinion.

As per supplement use. The food produced today is devoid of mineral and vitamin content compared to a 100 years ago_One needs to supplement their diet with vitamins and minerals, albiet over doing it is no good.

Entirely lacking or free from vitamin and mineral content. Do you even think before you write?

At one point in time only the rich suffered fro some diseases due to the fact the poor could only afford whole grains, brown sugar and no meats. The rich living on white flour and sugar with high red meat content suffered obesity and heart conditions. The asians seem to live longer than us and suffer less from cancers and hear attacks due to their diets of seafood and brown rice.

Food should be able to supply us with all the vitamins and minerals we need. However preparation of the food is often the culprit, in industry and the home. Industries that prepare food (not talking about fast food) often add chemicals for various reasons that cause the body not to absorb all the nutrients. Also cooking is every important.

Not everybody can eat 100% healthy all the time. Who cares if you have a vitamin daily. Its not going to do you any harm. And it may do you some good.

I take a multi and calcium - it might do some good (not enough studies to prove it though), and if not, at worst it gives me slightly more expensive pee.

The calcium is so I don't get cramps while cycling.
