KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) - Malaysia is considering a ban on fast-food advertisements, a news report has said.
Health Minister Chua Soi Lek said that his ministry will also consider placing a "sin tax" on fast-food chains, and a levy reserved for cigarettes and liquor in the mainly-Muslim nation, the Star daily said.
"We do not allow advertising for cigarettes and liquor. Fast food should be treated in the same way as alcohol. The time has come," Chua was quoted as saying.
He said that more Malaysians were suffering from "affluent" diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. Chua, who is also a medical doctor, said that obesity was the root cause of those diseases.
"There are a lot of lifestyle diseases because of rising affluence. Malaysians don't exercise enough and do not pay attention to the food they eat," he said.
Malaysia has a wide range of fast-food chains including McDonald's, Kentucky Fried Chicken and Burger King which offer drive-throughs on highways and delivery services, besides regular restaurants in malls and city centres.
They are a popular choice for a quick lunch and often serve as venues for children's parties and family weekend dinners.
Chua said obesity now affected 37 percent of the population from 20 percent a decade ago. He said 12 percent of Malaysians would suffer diabetes by 2020 if no action was taken.
"This is the only country where people discuss over breakfast where and what to eat for lunch. And then over lunch, it will be what's for supper," Chua was quoted as saying.
Noting that the move to place a ban on fast-food advertisement was "revolutionary", Chua said that the health ministry wanted to send a "strong message to consumers."
Revenue from fast food advertising on television, newspapers and billboards amounts to more than 100 million ringgit (29 million dollars) annually, the Star reported.

Many people who start to eat western style high fat diets suffer. N. Europeans to a limited extent have evolved to cope. Asians and NA natives are struggling with lactose intolerance, obesity and diabetes that are not huge issues if they stay with traditional diets. Beef and whole milk products are mostly a european diet. Not all oriental diets are totally healthy, coconut milk for example and deep frying in woks but there are advantages in eating more fish and stir fried veggies.
