The Calgary Stampede’s midway is often a stomach-churning affair, especially for those who aren’t partial to carnival rides.
A favourite of many Stampede-goers, 2015 marks a return of the wild and fun food concoctions that have become a tradition.
“It’s trying something new, but it’s also about having lots of fun on the midway,” said Stampede midway operations manager James Radke.
“We spend 365 days a year worrying about our diet … when Stampede time rolls around, it’s about letting loose, having some fun and eating things that are new, unique and different.”
This year’s array of unique food offerings aren’t all about the deep-fried and sugar-filled.
The ‘crazy cone,’ a double-headed, capital-J shaped corn tube erupting with ice cream from both ends is not only low in fat, it’s also gluten free.
Also available are ‘Fruit from the fruit’ — entire coconuts, watermelons and pineapples pureed and served inside the shell of the fruit from whence it came, giant spears of fruit served in large cups, as well as fruit and herb-infused drinks, voted ‘best beverage’ at the 2014 Stampede.
Probably the scariest food this year is cockroach pizza — a follow-up to last year’s scorpion-infused offering.
“It’s going to be the new fear factor,” he said.
“Our vendors come from all over North America, we get to try a little bit, but we trust them when they’re on the road to develop all these new ideas.”
While partial to poutine, Radke says he’ll be making a bee-line to the foot-long pizza dog when the midway opens their gates. “It’s the fun of Stampede,” he said. “It’s a hanging out with people and sharing food.”
