AFP: Afghan 'geological reserves worth a trillion dollars'

KABUL — Afghanistan, one of the world's poorest countries, is sitting on mineral and petroleum reserves worth an estimated one trillion dollars, President Hamid Karzai said Sunday.
The war-ravaged nation could become one of the richest in the world if helped to tap its geological deposits, Karzai told reporters.
"I have very good news for Afghans," Karzai said.
"The initial figures we have obtained show that our mineral deposits are worth a thousand billion dollars -- not a thousand million dollars but a thousand billion," he said.
He based his assertion, he said, on a survey being carried out by the United States Geological Survey (USGS), due to be completed in "a couple of months".
The USGS, the US government's scientific agency, has been working on the 17-million dollar survey for a number of years, Karzai said.
While Afghanistan is not renowned as a resource-rich country, it has a wide range of deposits, including copper, iron ore, gold and chromite, as well as natural gas, oil and precious and semi-precious stones.

Like they didn't know this before they went in. When this war is over, Afghanis will be living on reserves of useless land while the corporations will occupy the rest of the country. Sound familiar?
Afghans aren't Native North Americans. Afghanistan has never been successfully conquered and in fact has been a meat grinder for invaders for about 5000 years now.

As for your great concern about them being forced onto reservations, that's a quiet fear some have, that the drive to go net-zero by 2050 will foster a new age of colonialism. But hey, when it comes to leftist ideology, the ends always justify the means so it's okay.

Afghanistan defeats America!
............................
"On Sunday, a special Afghan council agreed to release 400 Taliban prisoners that Afghan President Ashraf Ghani said were too dangerous for him to approve releasing on his own authority.
Their release this week should mean that as early as next week the militant group’s political leaders will sit with an Afghan delegation to begin negotiations on the country’s political future — and that U.S. troops could fully exit the country in the coming months.
The negotiations are a product of the deal the U.S. and the Taliban signed in February. But a full U.S. withdrawal doesn’t depend on them being successful, just them starting — and President Donald Trump’s repeated commitment to pulling out American forces has undermined the Afghan government’s negotiating position, according to some critics.
Violence has increased in the months after that deal was signed. The United Nations reported late last month a 33% increase in deaths from Taliban attacks in the first six months of 2020, totaling nearly 1,300 civilians — although it found a 13% decrease in the total number of killed and wounded civilians.
Despite the sustained violence, Defense Secretary Mark Esper said over the weekend that another 3,600 U.S. troops will withdraw by November and the 2020 presidential election — fulfilling a key Trump campaign promise, but potentially leaving Afghan security forces more vulnerable to Taliban attacks or possibly diminishing joint counter terrorism efforts against the Islamic State’s affiliate in the region.
“We think that we can do all the core missions — first and foremost being ensured the United States is not threatened by terrorists coming out of Afghanistan — we can do those at a lower level,” Esper told Fox News Saturday."

Not really sure what the Afghan War was all about.

It was somehow wrapped up in 911 and the Gulf War but American foreign policy is a twisted mess so who knows what the hell it was about.

I feel badly for all the Canadians who died there because the cause was iffy at best.

I do not see in 2020 any reason for what happened.

Certainly the Taliban has only been strengthened and legitimized while the alliance - such as it was - has been all but destroyed.

Yes they could import a couple million newly-pacified Uighurs to show the Tajik, Hazara, Uzbek, Aymāq, Turkmen, Baloch, Pashai, Nuristani, Gujjar, Arab, Brahui, Pamiri, Kyrgyz and any other odds & sods the benefit of being 'good comrades'.
Multiculturalism has to start somewhere.

Afghanistan Peace Talks Open in Qatar, Seeking End to Decades of War

DOHA, Qatar — The Taliban and the Afghan government began historic peace talks in Qatar on Saturday, aimed at shaping a power-sharing government that would end decades of war that have consumed Afghanistan and left millions dead and displaced.

If realized, a peace deal would be the first time in generations that a new form of Afghan government was not being established at the point of a gun: The current model was ushered in by the American invasion that toppled the Taliban’s harsh Islamic regime in 2001, and each previous one back to the 1979 Soviet invasion was set off by coup, collapse or conquest..........More
