I'm really, really tired of this "liberal" vs "conservative" bull**** that is creeping up here from the US.
---------------------------------------------TenPenny-----------------------------------------------

Actually, now with Harper as your PM, liberal vs conservative knows no borders nor is this
debate a franchise exlusively exported by the US. Check out Thatcher in the past.
Australia's conservative PM. Even that of Germany's chancelor.
That's your natural innate bias living next door to a messy fat neighbor.

I do agree that such a debate is old and boring.

Yet such labels are convenient to describe quickly a set of beliefs that are definable
in any demographic section of the population.

Why be deceitful and pretend such a dichotomy does not exist ?

And why require a tedious paragraph to explain what you mean when one word hits the mark ?

And this complaint about polarization would occur with or without these words, eh ?

And finally it is human nature to associate mostly with those of like-minded thoughts
and after a long while being that way, it appears that the truth is what your group thinks
and the other group is plain stupid.

And so the dichotomy appears more to be truth and
understanding vs stupidity rather than liberal vs conservative. It's a natural result of hanging
around those of like mind.

With all those points being said, I still bow to your overall sentiment TenPenny that
a synthesis might be better than a stale conflict.

To this end, you might say that liberals emphasize COLLECTIVE RESPONSIBILITY while
conservatives emphasize INDIVIDUAL RESPONSIBILITY. Both are right and both sides do
think the other has a point. The argument centers on how much either way.

Jimmoyer

G'day!

While the generalization is taken as what it is, there's a specific intent buried within the terms "Liberal" and "Conservative" that represent pejorative dismissal and intended "insult". It's rarely the person or the party caucus that's identified as the hooligan or the "right-wing" "fascist" or the "left-wing" tree-hugger-enviro-nazi....the vitriol of "loyal" supporters from either camp simply label any instance of corruption or misadventure as what one can "expect" from a "conservative" ....or a "liberal".....

How often do we see or hear these terms applied when the outcome of some policy or action undertaken by adherents to "conservatism" or "liberalism" results in good things?

Rarely if ever....

These words are employed as divisive wedges with strong implication of ideological partisanship....despite the fact that during moments of considered thought...it may be acknowledged that there really isn't so great a difference between the people involved as would seem to be invited by the rhetoric.

Excellent point, MikeyDB. The terms are used as pejoratives.

But I don't think it is a false dichotomy. Thesis. Anti -Thesis. Liberal. Conservative. I don't know what other "epithets" we can use, eh ?

For further review I submit:

You might say that liberals emphasize COLLECTIVE RESPONSIBILITY
while conservatives emphasize INDIVIDUAL RESPONSIBILITY.

Both are right and both sides do
think the other has a point. The argument centers on how much either way.

I just want to point out before this debate goes much farther....

You start on the left foot, then right... not right then left.
