China has 221 million Internet users
China National News

(ANI)

New Delhi, Apr.24 : The Internet population in China reached 221 million by the end of February, which outnumbered the figure in the United States to rank the first in the world, according to the Ministry of Industry and Information.

The number was 210 million by the end of last year, only five million fewer than the US Internet users then, according to the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC).

According to Xinhua, despite rapidly increasing Internet population, the proportion of Internet users among the total population was still lower than the global average level, the ministry said, without giving specific figures.

The proportion was 16 percent at the end of 2007, compared with 19.1 percent of the world average, the CNNIC said.

With such a lacking infrastructure in rural China, it's no wonder China lacks when compared to the US & Japan in regards to proportion of it's citizens being online. Also, the fact that 53.3% of rural citizens do not understand or know what the internet would seem to indicate that the government needs to do some "educating" there.

http://www.cnnic.org.cn/html/Dir/2008/04/01/5038.htm
"However, the difference between the countryside and the city in China is still big. Internet penetration among urban residents is 27.3%, while that of rural residents is only 7.1%. Also the netizens in China are mainly urban residents, and the major factor affecting the development of the rural Internet is the educational level and income of rural residents. Among rural residents who are not netizens, 53.3% of them do not use the Internet because they do not understand computers or Internet and 23.1% because they have no equipment for Internet access."

China

As I explained to you before, my signature is a quote from a book...and captures the philosophy that I subscribe to....

If this signature offends you I'll be more than happy to replace it. They're just words China!

And there not even my words.....

The fact that that a character in a novel called "The Chink" gives you offense is understandable I suppose if the inference developed is that the essence of the remark is perjorative or insulting....I didn't think it was.
