Commentary: CNN owes China an apology for slandering

(chinadaily.com.cn)
Updated: 2008-04-16 01:43

The American Cable News Network (CNN) is making news with China, again. Last time, cnn.com editors chopped a picture with more than 10 stone-throwing Tibetan mobs chasing a Chinese riot police wagon nowhere to see, causing wrath of millions for photo doctoring. This time, an amateur anchor blasted out Chinese people as "goons and thugs" and Chinese-made goods as "junk".

Sixty-six-year-old Jack Cafferty, in a TV program called Situation Room that aired on April 9, obviously unhappy with China "holding hundreds of billions of dollars" of U.S. paper deficits, more and more American consumers "buying from (inexpensive) Wal-Mart", and certainly the "changed relationship" with China, moaned: "The Chinese are basically the same bunch of goons and thugs they have been in the past 50 years."

Many, assumingly including U.S. citizens, are stunned and shocked with such racist and vicious attack without any cover on a group of people. As a matter of fact, in the past years, Chinese people are getting on good terms with a huge number of earth residents, of different color, different language, from different continents.

As the head wind is changing its direction, Cafferty becomes sick.

So annoyed by Cafferty's despicable and shameless attack on an American national TV, American Chinese have launched an online petition, requesting an apology from CNN. The petition has got more than 40,000 signatures and the number of signatures is growing by the minute. China's Foreign Ministry, on April 15, also strongly condemned Cafferty's weird remarks, demanding CNN and the anchor himself take back the malicious remarks, and apologize to all Chinese people.

It is rare for the world audience to hear such a blatant discrimination against an ethnic group of people with such a derogatory connotation. What Cafferty did was using his privilege as a CNN anchor to insult China and slander all Chinese people. He is pathetic to have wantonly violated professional ethics of journalism and lost his conscience.

The United States is known for "melting-pot" culture, and the dangling "American dream" which have inspired people of different colors to emigrate to it. However, the like of Jack Cafferty, sitting before TV screens watched by tens of thousands of audiences in America and elsewhere, and attacking Chinese people, is nothing but showing its rudeness, arrogance, ignorance and hostility towards China.

After years of efforts by some Western media to demonize China has failed, the ink of Cafferty have come to the forefront to directly assault China, which reflects the utter frustration and despair of some wicked men and women.

The biased reportage on the Lhasa riot that took place on March 14 by CNN and some other western press has backfired. Tens of millions of Chinese, living at home and abroad, the young and Internet savvy especially, have rallied together. They have stood firmly behind the Chinese government and fought back the twisting journalists with one big voice: Stop doing it!

Angry with Cafferty's outburst, an increasing number of Chinese people have written on Chinese online chatrooms, demanding the Foreign Ministry deport CNN from China. China Daily website may not agree with the punitive measure, but a prompt and sincere apology from Cafferty and his organization is needed.

CNN is trash...just like FOX and every other entity frothing at the mouth about "freedom-of speech" and "freedom of the press" and protecting their incompetence and prejudices with the First Amendment.

One must understand that (I don't know how China funds its television transmissions) the western "press" is nothing more than a paid hooker... a "lady of the evening"...a wh0re selling itself to the advertising dollars...which in turn are manipulators hiding behind piles of money with every intention of influencing not only personal tastes and habits, but the outcomes from elections and candidacies. The engines of greed in western society are fueled by national broadcasting companies and the message of distortion and fantasy is their stock-in-trade.

They should be given the respect they deserve....very little.

To be fair, insulting the Chinese nation as goons and thugs (fairly accurate) is not the same as making racist comments about the Han ethnic group.

There is no such thing as a "Chinese" race, as China is pretty multi-racial, it just has one dominant race that gets favoured treatment.

Okay.....

The Chinese government (the CCP) are goons and thugs. They have demonstrated this over and over and over, from Cultural Revolution and Great Leap Forward, to the harvesting of human organs from the executed, to the selling of unsafe goods, to Tianamen Square, the use of slave labour in the camps, the suppression iof religion, to repeated repression in Tibet.............

the Chinese people, according to China, and obviously including a significant portion of those lucky enough to live in the West, support whole-heartedly the Chinese Government.

So, what is the difference?

The CCP weilds the whip, but those who back them are just as guilty......

Do you hold the FBI in the same esteem? What fair/just government hires goons to terrorize children at Waco? What squad of goons is hired by the United States government to "round-out" the shortfall in personnel that country is experiencing as a result of their ilegal and ill-advised invaision of Iraq? If you're going to label the Chinese as goons, surely there's sufficient evidence to compell the same conclusion of America and its behavior all over the planet!

As an addendum to my prior contribution...

When a capitalist society uses riot gear equipped publicly paid "goons" and erects chain-link fences to keep the filthy unwashed from meetings of the wealthy and powerful ..Seattle, Quebec world trade "conferences..etc. To suggest that "goon-ship" and "thuggery" are the sole province of China is a little short sighted.....?

The incident at WACO was a travesty, a stupid, botched raid by BATF, the aggressiveness of which was covered up by the FBI.......I watched an interview with the Sherrif of Waco, who in tears, asked why they simply hadn't asked him to serve the warrant......he had done so before, arrested Koresh on suspicion of murder, and seized weapons WITHOUT INCIDENT! Those weapons, BTW, were returned when Koresh was acquitted.......

Another disgraceful incident was the murder of Randy Weaver's wife and child at Ruby Ridge...........by the FBI and US Marshalls.....

NOW, that said, comparing the misdeeeds of the USA, internally and externally, to those of China in the years since 1945 is like comparing a firecracker to a nuclear bomb.

As many as 77 million killed by the CCP.

Think about that before you make facile comparisons.

You once accused me in a post of seeing only black or white.

WoW! Talk about the pot calling the kettle black! :)

Poor ITN....

I'd suggest you get your attorney's working on getting a refund from your education system my friend...

Leaping to a personal attack as the opening gambit in soliciting sympathy for a bankrupt and counterfeit philosophy can only demonstrate the failure of your educational process...

You have my sympathy.

And which side of the coin are we to accept in the demonization of say the Russians?

Didn't several million Russians die in the Second World war?

Once again, it's just not that simple Colpy. If we discredit the Chinese for the same behavior that Spain, France, the United States, Britain and a whole slew of nationalist governments have committed over time...is that balanced..?

And by the way...I haven't suggested that the Communist Chinese aren't thugs and goons, I'm simply suggesting that declaring one segment of the population of China as responsible for the gooni-ness and thuggery of past deeds is more appropriate than painting the entire canvas with that brush.

The same is of course true for the BATF and the FBI and so on...

The difficulty is coming to terms with the idea that these actions are representative of the whole nation/people.... CNN and FOX and the CBC and and and...lead people to believe that there are a majority of citizens who embrace the credo and dysfunctionality of the few who participate in this kind of behavior. It's simply not true.

How many times have we watched as America claims "the higher ground" while doing exactly the same things as they've cited as rationale for their actions..?

And yes I'm sorry if you have difficulty with the truth but yes America has done many of the same things that would be adjudicated as thuggery and goon-ness when someone else does it!

Who armed the Mahujideen and covertly supplied weapons to the Contras, who has practiced regime-change with efforts to assassinate heads of state.... the list goes on and on but you can't bring yourself to acknowledge that while it's easier to point fingers at other people and other nations....the United States of Rampant Paranoia has behaved exactly the same way ...many many times!

But Colpy...how can we have a thread here without somehow working in the evil deeds of the USA, CIA, FBI, etc.? It is so neccessary to turn every political thread that critisizes another country into a thread that critisizes the US.

What are you trying for here Eaglesmack?

It was an American television network that was being discussed, it is a perception fed and expanded upon by America that the woes of America are "caused" by China....or someone else whenever the focus needs shifting away from the the U.S......

Would you like to pretend that the feeds from American network television won't have an influence and aren't intended to influence opinions in Canada and around the world?

Canadians, Germans, everyone is "entertained" by the American media machinery... a machine that is used (as it is in many other nations) to influence and propagandize...

The rejection of the "moral authority" of America when it comes to China's misdeeds and maltreatment of its native citizens is only noteworthy when there's an axe to grind...If the same lens of scrutiny and critical analysis is played over either the United States or even Canada for that matter, the accusation that China has some unique "corner" on thuggery and goonsmanship...simply doesn't wash. The notion is that if CNN or FOX or anyone wants to paint the Chinese as the evil-doers...or the Moslems as the evil-doers or the Vietnamese as evil-doers...that we should all accept that analysis without considering either the source or the hypocrisy involved.

That might wash with Americans and it obviously has great success here in Canada, but the "truth" frequently lies some distance from the invited perception and conclusion...

Sorry if you find it uncomfortable being on the dirty end of the stick so many times, but that's something you and your nation have invited on yourselves!

Hey, I use the tactics you do, but I guess taking it in is pretty tough.

But I'll apologize and rephrase.

Let's all give China a pass because MikeyDB can't see anything wrong beyond the North American continent.

Because we all know how lazy, greedy and irresponsible Canadians and especially Americans are. Let the Chinese Communist Party beat Tibetans to death, as long as the US isn't doing the beating, MikeyDB could give a flying phuck.

Better?

Poor fellow.

What possible authority do you or the United States think you have when it comes to questions of "moral authority"? What possible argument can you provide that's capable of refuting the moral and fiscal corruption of the United States that's spread war and hardship around the world?

Compared to China, who would you think the most likely candidate for the prize of who has influenced more mayhem and brought more carnage and death to the world?

Poor fellow.

I have more morality in my left nut than you have accumulated your entire life my dear Mikey. It becomes quite obvious when you dismiss what's going on in China.

How's that cat of yours BTW?
