YICHANG -- A mayor in central China's Hubei Province was asked to leave her post following an inquiry nearly a month after she killed a boy when driving on a highway, local authorities said on Saturday.
While driving a Toyota Prado from Yichang to Dangyang on March 17, Dangyang City Mayor Fan Xiaolan hit and killed an 11-year-old student of Chuanxin Primary School, said Wang Genhua, spokesman of the Communist Party of China discipline inspection committee of Yichang city.
The accident occurred at 7:20 a.m. and Fan immediately reported it to police who arrived at 7:25 a.m., according to Wang.
"Fan cooperated with the police and sincerely apologized to the family of the victim," Wang said, without giving further details.
Local media reported Fan paid 200,000 yuan (US$28,571) in compensation to the family.
According to regulations, officials shall not drive government vehicles without permission. Fan was unauthorized to be driving the vehicle.
Further investigation into the case is underway.

At least she stayed at the scene, and took responsibility. How many times to you hear about people in the States and Canada fleeing the scene of an accident(more often than not, they are drunk or the car is stolen in those cases, but still...)?

I think she has probably suffered quite enough. Hopefully she will be able to resume her duties soon.

Lucky her then, life is cheap in China --$28,571. Of course the 11 year old would be much less of a loss than the party mayor so happiness all round..........

Has the mayor finished suffering yet? Been allocated a driver so she stops randomly killing off the peasantry. How much of the money have the family been charged to fix the car because their stupid kid went under the wheels and delayed an important person by dying........

Still no word on the mayor China. Has she finished her suffering yet from killing a child? Still wracked with grief and remorse huh?
