Enriching Uranium, Canada vies for membership

We are the Saudi Arabia of uranium,” says Brad Wall, Saskatchewan’s newly elected premier, who is visiting Washington to lobby the Energy Department and Congress to get U.S. approval for an enrichment program. A spokesman for the Canadian embassy said that “it is in our mutual interest for Canada to become a reliable supplier of uranium fuel to the US.” Canada clamoring to enter the enrichment club could cause a big fuss, especially as the U.S. and other powers are now cracking down on Iran for moving ahead on its own enrichment program.
“This is a big problem if the Bush administration decides to say to the Canadians, ‘You’re different. You’re not Iranians,” says Daryl Kimball, executive director of the Washington-based Arms Control Association.

I wish you'd added some comments on what your take on that is, Toni, I've learned to respect you as a clear thinker and a sensible person. I think Brad Wall is wrong, we're not the Saudi Arabia of uranium and that's a damnfool comparison to make. We have a lot of uranium, as Saudi Arabia has a lot of oil, but we're not part of a cartel that artificially inflates the price of uranium and holds the world to ransom for it. We're not a repressive feudal theocracy either. Neither are we like Iran, another repressive theocracy. Our PM isn't openly committed to the destruction of another country and doesn't talk about the imminent return of the 12th Imam (the Islamic version of Christianity's Second Advent) who will put an end to this vale of tears and convert the whole world to the true faith, by the sword if necessary. We *are* different.

Thanks for the compliment. It is rather sterile as I left it isn't it?

I wasn't a big fan of that analogy either, for pretty much all of the reasons you've detailed. Not much to add in that respect.

I think this issue is particularly salient as the world presses Iran with demands for details on their program of enrichment. I'm sure that our government would have no problem, as there is no distrust of Canada as a signatory of the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty. Even Iran has made great steps by resolving the six long standing issues on that front. The issue boils down to trust. In that respect, it could be very touchy diplomatically. I don't think there are any stolen laptops with Canadian plans for missiles or explosive test designs though, so it will be interesting to see how this all plays out.

It's an intriguing addition to a long standing problem. I don't see why we shouldn't be adding value to our own products.

What uses are there for enriched uranium? As long as they are not used as weapons I don't see an issue with it. We already supply 60% of world's medical radioactive isotopes. Maybe we can get the Yanks to pay for a new reactor at Chalk River.

I agree. Why don't you folk get that Three Mile Island reactor cooking up some primo-enriched weapons grade nose-cones for your artillery and weapons folk over in Iraq?

There's a rumor that them nasty war-mongering ragheads got themselves a Nookler program...

Maybe you could get help from the Chernobyl designers to upgrade your Three Mile Island facility..... But wait....haven't you folk lost enough nukes over the years to make this effort pointless anyway....? Just go find the ones you lost and you'll have plenty..;)

I don't see how this post has any relevance to the US having to pay for a Canadian Reactor. But oh wait...it is just another opportunity to slam the US.

Why would we get the Chernoble people to upgrade our reactor when theirs suffered a complete meltdown? Three Mile Island resulted in no deaths or even injuries.

Pointless...talk about the pot calling the kettle black.
