Voting TODAY in Pakistan!!

The opposition party is very much worried about tempering and fraud. But Musharraf has assured the country the voting will be free, peaceful and fair.

If the Peoples Party does not have a landslide win, then the results have been rigged, said the Opposition Leader.
Opinion polls suggested the top two opposition parties would do very well on election day.
If they do as well as expected and capture a two-thirds majority, the parties could challenge Musharraf's re-election to a new five-year term in October.

"With the stable, democratically elected government we will ensure a successful fight against terrorism and extremism," Musharraf said in a speech broadcast on state-run Pakistan Television.

I wish the people of Pakistan good luck and the results they want!

NO Kreskin no need for debate..;)

If we accept the rationale that killing Afghanis as means to ridding the world of the Taliban and the Muslim Brotherhood and Al Queada....why certainly a military dictatorship sponsored and maintained by the United States is perfectly acceptable as well....

I've missed the focused scrutiny of some participants here at CC when it comes to what should be done (if anything) regarding this military dictatorship that is the life-line to the Taliban in Afghanistan...that is the recruiting pool of Al Queada and where an oppressive regime exists and has existed much longer than Afghanistan or Iraq for that matter...

No we don't need to look at Pakistan and acknowledge that Canadians are dying in Afghanistan (not to mention of course Afghanis) because after all, Musharif is an ally, an ally that can't be expected to fall victim to the same logic of "those who harbor terrorists" being as guilty of 9/11 for London or Madrid or anything else done by the really bad folk who it's OK to eradicate....and everyone around them as well...of course.....

Perhaps some folk here at CC are looking for another Korea.....

BBC reported this evening that there was some trouble in polling areas with a UN agent expressing considerable doubt as to whether votes were being properly counted. In one instance, opposition voters were violently turned away while police stood by and did nothing. Such violence can only lead to further counter violence and perpetuation of revolution.

It's' official.... the opposition won!!
Pakistan's ruling party, the main legislative backer of President Pervez Musharraf, has conceded defeat in that country's parliamentary election.
"We accept the election results, and will sit on opposition benches," Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, head of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Q, told AP Television News on Tuesday. "We are accepting the results with grace and open heart."

Pakistani parties to share power

Nawaz Sharif (l) and Asif Ali Zardari were winners in February's elections

The leaders of the two parties that won Pakistan's elections have signed an agreement on a coalition government.
Asif Ali Zardari, widower of ex-premier Benazir Bhutto, and ex-PM Nawaz Sharif called on President Pervez Musharraf to convene parliament immediately.
February's parliamentary elections delivered a crushing defeat to parties loyal to President Pervez Musharraf.
Mr Musharraf has urged the incoming government to leave politics aside and concentrate on good governance.
The coalition deal will bring together the Pakistan People's Party, which was led by Benazir Bhutto until her assassination, and the PML(N) party of Mr Sharif.
All the sacked judges will be reinstated via a parliamentary resolution passed within 30 days of forming a new government.
That appears to mean that the chief justice will get back his job, in defiance of Mr Musharraf's strong objections, our correspondent says.

So, here comes the change!!
They call for Musharraf to step down.
Will he?

"The PPP said it would proceed cautiously when it came to dealing with the president. But most analysts see this as a step either to the reduction of his powers - or a confrontation between the new parliament and the presidency."
It will be interesting to watch how all three wannabe leaders will proceed... "with caution" is quite recommendable!
