British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Czech Republic president Václav Klaus have refused to attend an EU meeting in Portugal (the current holders of the rotating EU presidency) with African leaders as Zimbabwe's dictator Robert Mugabe has attended despite being banned from the EU (it seems you can't trust the Portuguese and other continentals these days) and, as usual, is left mainly to the British to voice concern over an evil dictator. Zimbabwe, formerly known as Rhodesia, gained its independence from Britain in 1980, when it was one of Africa's richest countries.

Now the Archbishop of York, George Sentamu (originally from Uganda), has put himself alongside Gordon Brown's stance by cutting up his dog collar live on the BBC this morning and vowing never to wear one again until Mugabe is removed from power. The Archbishop of York is the third highest ranking figure in the Anglican church after the Queen and the Archbishop of Canterbury. Many Africans (and Europeans) see the monster as a man who fought against British rule....

Archbishop of York cuts up his dog collar in astonishing live TV protest at Mugabe

Zimbabwe gained its independence from Britain in 1980. Under Britain's rule it was Africa's richest country. Now, under anti-British Mugabe, it's Africa's poorest, with the world's lowest life expectancy and highest inflation

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown refused to attend EU-African Summit as dictator Mugabe attended

The Archbishop of York today cut up his dog collar on live television in a protest over the rule of Robert Mugabe in Zimbabwe.

Dr John Sentamu said he will refuse to wear the clergyman's badge of identity until Mugabe is out of office.

The Archbishop, third in the hierarchy of the Church of England (after the Monarch and the Archbishop of Canterbury), will not replace his dog collar "even for the Queen", aides said.

Protest: The Archbishop of York, John Sentamu (the third highest Anglican figure after the Queen and the Archbishop of Canterbury) cuts up his dog collar live on the BBC this morning. He vows never to wear one again until Mugabe is removed from power from the former British colony, even for the Queen

His demonstration came as controversy surrounded the presence of the Zimbabwe ruler at the European Union's summit with African leaders in Lisbon.

Gordon Brown has boycotted the meeting rather than come face-to-face with Mugabe and German Chancellor Angela Merkel accused him of "damaging Africa" , adding: "We don't have the right to look away when human rights are trampled on."

Dr Sentamu is a long-standing critic of Mugabe. Earlier this year the Ugandan-born Archbishop described him as "the worst kind of racist dictator" and called for him to be isolated with the same kind of economic and sporting sanctions that were used against South Africa in the apartheid era.

Today, the Archbishop criticised the African leaders who have rallied round Mugabe and who still see him as a freedom fighter who liberated his country from white rule.

Dr Sentamu took out a pair of scissors and cut up his dog collar on BBC One's Andrew Marr Show.

"As an Anglican this is what I wear to identify myself, that I'm a clergyman," he said.

Angry: He said he would not wear the item again until Mugabe had left power. "Stop looking to the past" Sentamu tells Mugabe

"Do you know what Mugabe has done? He has taken people's identity and literally, if you don't mind, cut it to pieces.

"So, as far as I am concerned, from now on I am not going to wear a dog collar until Mugabe is gone."

The decision not to wear a dog collar means that the Archbishop will appear in public in an unadorned Church of England bishop's purple shirt. He will not wear the dog collar with archepiscopal robes during services, even on state occasions.

The detachable dog collar is thought have been invented in the 1800s while the collarino - material which partially covers the white collar and is common with Roman Catholic clergy - is thought to date as far back as the 17th century.

According to research carried out in 1976 by the Church of England's Enquiry Centre, the dog collar became popular with Anglican clergy during the Oxford Movement in the 19th century.

The Archbishop said that African leaders who support Mugabe are displaying "pernicious, self-destructing racism.

"A white man does it, the whole world cries," Dr Sentamu said. "A black person does it, there is a certain sense of, oh, this is colonialism.

"I am sorry, I don't buy this. Africa and all the world have got to liberate Africa from this mental slavery and this colonial mentality - whenever there is anything you blame somebody else instead of yourself."

The Archbishop said of Zimbabwe, where many shops are empty of basic foodstuffs and only one in five people have a job: "Mugabe has turned his country from a bread basket into a basket case.

"He has actually taken a country really into a sheer chaos and he has been so brutal that in the long run the world has got to say, if the South African people and leaders won't do it, something has got to happen."

Dr Sentamu called on Christians to "pray, march and protest" over Zimbabwe as they did over Ian Smith's white-ruled Rhodesia and apartheid South Africa.

"As Christmas comes around, spare a pound for a child starving in Darfur and in Zimbabwe.

Let this money be collected so that when the time comes, people can actually have their houses and their homes rebuilt."

Interesting man that Archbishop, a bit of a cavalier attitude toward church property though. What's his stand on Mugabes policys regarding white teddy bears?

It's great to make jokes DB but this guy is right. That ass-hole Mugabe turned one of the richest countries in Africa into a poverty-stricken dump. Zimbabwe needed liberating a hell of a lot more than Iraq, and still does.

No Mugabe did not turn Zimbabwe into a poverty-stricken-dump, the former white rulers did that in revenge and to punish the rebellious elements back in to line regardless of the human cost.
Mugabe and Co; had a choice a poverty stricken independence or a lesser poverty stricken slavery.

That argument doesn't hold water.

Clapping for the Zimbabwe Mugabe destroyed

Clapping for the tyrant
This is really beyond me and my understanding of issues African. I am always amazed at how problems in Africa are allowed to fester and sometimes accorded the impression that things are alright when again like I said in my blog yesterday, they really are not.
One can say they reason why Darfur has continued to be the greatest humanitarian crisis in years is because African leaders have refused to stand up to other leaders in Sudan who have decimated their people with a brutality that is now only second to the Nazis.
The Nigerian elections which were clearly unfair, not credible and definitely not free as many objective observers could see were passed off as free and fair, everyone accepting the unacceptable and moving on.
The one that really beats me is at the summit of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) in Lusaka yesterday, the gerontocrat Grand Despot of Africa – Robert Mugabe drew the greatest applause from the delegates at the summit.
Now, this might be a case of history not catching up with the present since Robert Mugabe at 83 is the oldest living African freedom fighter who is still in office, but this was at least a generation ago.
The demise of Zimbabwe
This man came into office in 1980, assumed all the levers of power soon afterwards and embarked on what is essentially the politics of anti-imperialism (PDF) – kicking the white man out and letting the indigenous black man take over the property and businesses of the white men who were forcibly dispossessed.
Now, there is more to the workings of this matter, but these few facts remain evident; Zimbabwe used to be a vibrant economy and the bread basket of Southern Africa, many of the white men who were driven out of their farms are just as Zimbabwean as any other black Zimbabwean – the white could possibly trace their ancestry back a lot further than any of their indigenous assailants.
The fundamental flaws in Mugabe’s mission was that a fair value was not placed on the property seized and after seizure, it was handed over to either his cronies or so-called freedom fighters who as mobs could raid the farms but had not inkling as to how to run the farms.
In the process, the mainstays of the Zimbabwean economy collapsed around a political situation that should be untenable if any African leader had risen up to really challenge the rape of Zimbabwe by selfsame Africans.

Worlds worst…

http://www.parade.com/articles/editions/2006/edition_01-22-2006/Dictators

I wonder how many of those listed as the world’s worst dictatorships can be identified as sharing strong ties to imperial nations like Britain and the United States?

It’s typical in the controlled press (media in general) of our post-modern chaos that flash headlines and “sound-byte” mentality pervade the fifth estate. While the American and of course those eager to be seen as “freedom loving supporters of America…” omit a detailed analysis of how different dictators and different nations have been influenced and directly impacted through outside interference. We know that Iraq isn’t alone in it’s demonization and that the impact of America and American prejudices (predicated on greed and sycophant to Zionist interests) have been at work behind the scenes in a great many situations and nations that have installed oppressive regimes and dictatorships in efforts to appease Yankee greed.

It’s only through informing and educating people that American institutions like the School of the Americas is but one expression of the preparedness of the people and government of the United States to practice the post-modern equivalent of direct military imperialism through economic bullying.

Currently the people of America are upset about the low quality and potential dangers involved in purchasing manufactured goods and food from the People’s Republic of China….

What isn’t expressed nearly so boisterously is the fact that it is American corporations continuing their pursuit of enormous profits that are behind this and many other situations. Ignorance is bliss when you can fool all of the people some of the time….

From policies of regime change…where there’s mineral wealth and slave labour available, to trumped up dangers to world peace….America is behind a great deal of what happens in the world and yet even with the dawning knowledge of this situation around the world, the darkest secrets of ties to America are studiously avoided in the world’s “free press”.

We know that the political nabobs of Canada and the United States lie through their teeth and have been lying for generations. Does anyone still believe that the monsters identified by this website are the sole cause and source behind why nations suffer?

There may be no justice in Robert Mugabe’s nation, but to pretend that freedom and justice exist in Canada or America is self-delusion.

Why don't we whine about the plight of Columbians, someplace quite as bad if not worse than Zimbabwe. Because Chiquita Banana pays to have it presented to us differently than it is. I can find numerous articles citing the marvelous lifestyles enjoyed by the inhabitants of that tortured country. Of course if prefere to cling to the fairy tales pumped out by industry shills which eases our minds about the true cost of bananas and coffee, people die and live in misery so we may enjoy our breakfasts economically.

Back to Zimbabwe. It is no fairy tale that Mugabe and Co. threw white farmers off their farms and out of their businesses though they represented the only money coming into the country. Threw the whites out and turned over their property to his henchmen who hadn't a clue how to run farms. Even other African leaders agree that Mugabe's rule has been a disaster.

So the fairy tales go. If African leaders want to remain leaders and not become stiffer they say what they're told.
