TEHRAN, Iran - Iran is capable of firing 11,000 rockets into enemy bases within the first minute after any possible attack, state-run television quoted a top Revolutionary Guards Corps commander as saying Saturday.
Gen. Mahmoud Chaharbaghi, the missile commander of the Guards, said Iran has identified all enemy positions and was prepared to respond in less than a minute to any possible attack.
"Enemy bases and positions have been identified. ... The Guards ground force will fire 11,000 rockets into identified enemy positions within the first minute of any aggression against the Iranian territory," the television quoted Chaharbaghi as saying.
Chaharbaghi did not specifically identify the bases or the enemy and did not refer to arch foes Israel or the United States by name.
The U.S. has 40,000 troops on various U.S. bases in other Persian Gulf countries and 20,000 in Mideast waters. Another 160,000 U.S. troops are in neighboring Iraq.
Tensions are high between Washington and Tehran over U.S. accusations that Iran is secretly trying to develop nuclear weapons and helping Shiite militias in Iraq that target U.S. troops. Iran denies the claims.
Washington has said it is addressing the Iran situation diplomatically, rather than militarily, but U.S. officials also say that all options are open.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has repeatedly demanded that foreign forces leave the region and urged the U.S. to acknowledge it has failed in Iraq.

As much as I don't like George Bush and his policies, the statements made by Iran are done because they know that the US is a democratic society who will have to answer to it's people for any actions they take over Iran. Ahmedinijad likes to rattle the Sabre, but he is all mouth and no truosers as we would say in England. He knows the US is highly unlikely to retaliate over statements like the one Iran made. It's because the USA is a democracy that the have some control. If they weren't a democracy they would have opened up a missile silo in North Dakota and taken out Tehran by now. You have to be a mad man or a calculated risk taker to threaten a country that could take you out from the other side of the world. One guided Intercontinental Ballistic Missile would really ruin you day. 7000 Iranian rockets would waste your day....trying to figure out where the hell they are going to land. (assuming that they manage to get airbourne in the first place!)

Bush can equally be cited for saber rattling. One ICBM would be catastrophic, unless you think that China and Russia would endorse such an action. That's one way to test his WWIII rhetoric.

Exactly my point...no matter how we like or dislike the current administration of the USA, it is a democracy and they realise that there are repercussions for actions taken and that is exactly why the likes of Iran keep pushing their rhetoric. But eventually it will end in tears for Ahmedinijad. It wont be from an ICBM, it could be more like targeted military action , but I think it could come from within Iran, from the majority of Iranians, who by all accounts tire of Ahmedinijad's fanatacism. Even the Supreme Ruler of Iran seems to be weary of him.

Not a good idea on their part, but they're only threatening retaliation and telling everyone that they're armed to the teeth....A good sign to start a meaningful dialogue in my view...
The timings right, but the success may well rest in who is picked as emmissary...
Might I suggest the French????

A simple solution to the nuclear energy thing for Iran...Why not have them buy Canadian reactors??? They're heavy water and safer and we can negotiate a deal that everyone can live with....

So if they threatened your troops the most logical reaction would be for Canada to come running to them asking for dialogue? Don't you think that is a show of weakness? Don't you think that by caving in to them you are just handing them a politcal victory?

Well the threat they posed was retaliatory, saying if attacked they would respond with rockets. Offering CANDU is not a sign of weakness or caving, it is an alternative that requires natural uranium fuel, not enriched uranium which I believe is the bone of contention here, as refined uranium can be used for nuclear weapons.

Washingtons 'all options' are what seem to land the US in troubled waters to start with.
