THE TRUE POTENTIAL OF MONARCHY

It's great having a constitutional monarchy

A letter written to the Daily Mail newspaper by a Brit living in the United States, describing how he thinks having a monarchy is preferable to having a republic:

"As an expat, I find it distressing to read that the advocates of a republic still haven't evolved beyond the confused thoughts of a sixth-former struggling with the principles of democracy and the realities of a monarchy.

Contrary to some observations, many of the world's most modern nations are constitutional monarchies - such as Sweden, Norway, The Netherlands, Japan, Belgium, Denmark, Spain, Australia and Canada.

The opportunities offered through a constitutional monarchy are on display when one looks at the top rankings for innovation, social equality, economic performance, health care, education and absence of corruption which, on average, all see constitutional monarchies outperforming republics.

One should not confuse the "comic opera" associated with the trappings of state with the monarchy. Such operatics can also be regularly observed in France, Russia or the US.

As for mediocrity and ridicule, while the modern UK takes a perverse and morbid pleasure in deconstructing its institutions, few honestly believe the mediocre laughing-stocks from the great republics (Bush, Berlusconi, Chirac, Yeltsin or Chavez) are more respected than our Queen, even in their own countries."
