Queen Mother memorial planned

How the memorial will look
A memorial to the Queen Mother is to stand outside Buckingham Palace alongside a statue of her husband King George VI, if plans are approved.
An application to build a Philip Jackson statue of the Queen Mother, dressed in Garter robes and looking towards the palace, has been submitted for planning permission.
The Queen Mother, mother of the current Queen, was the Queen Consort of King George VI between 1936 and 1952. She died in 2002
Buckingham Palace says architects hope to mount the statue on a plinth and add two new bronze relief panels by Paul Day to the monument.
On one side, the relief will depict a scene with the King and Queen together, while the other shows an aspect of her life as the Queen Mother.
The memorial will symbolise the fact that the Queen Mother outlived George by 50 years by the distance left between the two statues.
The plan has been approved by the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh and submitted by Donald Insall Associates and Donald Buttress.
