THE Queen may have to give evidence at Princess Diana’s inquest, it emerged yesterday.

Lawyers for Harrods tycoon Mohamed Fayed demanded Her Majesty explain comments she allegedly made to Paul Burrell after the Princess’s death in 1997.

Diana’s former butler claimed the Queen had warned him of “powers at work about which we have no knowledge”.

Michael Mansfield QC, representing Fayed at a preliminary hearing at London’s High Court, called for the monarch to be “directly approached” to find out what she meant.

Tragic ... Diana

He also claimed that references to the conversations were edited out of police documents.

He told outgoing coroner Baroness Butler-Sloss:

“Nobody appears to have approached Her Majesty about the conversations.”

Lady Butler-Sloss said the documents had been altered at her request.

She did not rule on allowing Fayed’s team access to the edited passages.

But she said contacting the Queen was “unheard of”, admitting: “I don’t know the protocol.”

Fayed, 73, has also called for Prince Philip and the Prince of Wales to give evidence.
