Innocent people across the world are now paying the price of the "Iraq effect," with the loss of hundreds of lives directly linked to the invasion and occupation by American and British forces.
An authoritative U.S. study of terrorist attacks after the invasion in 2003 contradicts the repeated denials of George Bush and Tony Blair that the war is not to blame for an upsurge in fundamentalist violence worldwide. The research is said to be the first to attempt to measure the "Iraq effect" on global terrorism.
It found that the number killed in jihadist attacks around the world has risen dramatically since the Iraq war began in March 2003. The study compared the period between 11 September 2001 and the invasion of Iraq with the period since the invasion. The count -- excluding the Arab-Israel conflict -- shows the number of deaths due to terrorism rose from 729 to 5,420. As well as strikes in Europe, attacks have also increased in Chechnya and Kashmir since the invasion. The research was carried out by the Centre on Law and Security at the NYU Foundation for Mother Jones magazine.
Iraq was the catalyst for a ferocious fundamentalist backlash, according to the study, which says that the number of those killed by Islamists within Iraq rose from seven to 3,122. Afghanistan, invaded by US and British forces in direct response to the September 11 attacks, saw a rise from very few before 2003 to 802 since then. In the Chechen conflict, the toll rose from 234 to 497. In the Kashmir region, as well as India and Pakistan, the total rose from 182 to 489, and in Europe from none to 297.
Two years after declaring "mission accomplished" in Iraq President Bush insisted: "If we were not fighting and destroying the enemy in Iraq, they would not be idle. They would be plotting and killing Americans across the world and within our borders. By fighting these terrorists in Iraq, Americans in uniform are defeating a direct threat to the American people."
Mr Blair has also maintained that the Iraq war has not been responsible for Muslim fundamentalist attacks such as the 7/7 London bombings which killed 52 people. "Iraq, the region and the wider world is a safer place without Saddam [Hussein]," Mr Blair declared in July 2004.
Announcing the deployment of 1,400 extra troops to Afghanistan earlier this week -- raising the British force level in the country above that in Iraq -- the Prime Minister steadfastly denied accusations by MPs that there was any link between the Iraq war an unravelling of security elsewhere.
Last month John Negroponte, the Director of National Intelligence in Washington, said he was "not certain" that the Iraq war had been a recruiting factor for al-Qa'ida and insisted: "I wouldn't say that there has been a widespread growth in Islamic extremism beyond Iraq, I really wouldn't."
Yet the report points out that the US administration's own National Intelligence Estimate on "Trends in Global Terrorism: Implications for the United States" -- partially declassified last October -- stated that " the Iraq war has become the 'cause célèbre' for jihadists ... and is shaping a new generation of terrorist leaders and operatives."
The new study, by Peter Bergen and Paul Cruickshank, argues that, on the contrary, "the Iraq conflict has greatly increased the spread of al-Qa'ida ideological virus, as shown by a rising number of terrorist attacks in the past three years from London to Kabul, and from Madrid to the Red Sea.
"Our study shows that the Iraq war has generated a stunning increase in the yearly rate of fatal jihadist attacks, amounting to literally hundreds of additional terrorist attacks and civilian lives lost. Even when terrorism in Iraq and Afghanistan is excluded, fatal attacks in the rest of the world have increased by more than one third."
In trying to gauge the "Iraq effect," the authors had focused on the rate of terrorist attacks in two periods -- from September 2001 to 30 March 2003 (the day of the Iraq invasion) and 21 March 2003 to 30 September 2006. The research has been based on the MIPT-RAND Terrorism database.
The report's assertion that the Iraq invasion has had a far greater impact in radicalising Muslims is widely backed security personnel in the UK. Senior anti-terrorist officials told The Independent that the attack on Iraq, and the now-discredited claims by the U.S. and British governments about Saddam Hussein's weapons of mass destruction, had led to far more young Muslims engaging in extremist activity than the invasion of Afghanistan two years previously.
Dame Eliza Manningham-Buller, head of the Secret Service (MI5) said recently: "In Iraq attacks are regularly videoed and the footage is downloaded into the internet.
"Chillingly, we see the results here. Young teenagers are being groomed to be suicide bombers. The threat is serious, is growing and will, I believe, be with us for a generation."
In Afghanistan the most active of the Taliban commanders, Mullah Dadullah, acknowledged how the Iraq war has influenced the struggle in Afghanistan.
"We give and take with the mujahedin in Afghanistan," he said. The most striking example of this has been the dramatic rise in suicide bombings in Afghanistan, a phenomenon not seen through the 10 years of war with the Russians in the 1980s.
The effect of Iraq on various jihadist conflicts has been influenced according to a number of factors, said the report. Countries with troops in Iraq, geographical proximity to the country, the empathy felt for the Iraqis and the exchange of information between Islamist groups. "This may explain why jihadist groups in Europe, Arab countries, and Afghanistan were more affected by the Iraq war than other regions," it said.
Russia, like the US, has used the language of the "war on terror" in its actions in Chechnya, and al-Qa'ida and their associates have entrenched themselves in the border areas of Pakistan from where they have mounted attacks in Kashmir, Pakistan and India.
Statistics for the Arab-Israel conflict also show an increase, but the methodology is disputed in the case of Palestinian attacks in the occupied territories and settler attacks on Palestinians.
* The U.S. is joining the Iraqi government in a diplomatic initiative inviting Iran and Syria to a "neighbours meeting" on stabilising Iraq, the Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said yesterday. The move reflects a change of approach by the Bush administration, which previously had resisted calls to include Iran and Syria in such talks.

Again for the tenth time I repeat
Terrorism has been aimed by Islamic fundamentalists at Western democratic nations since before the 1972 bombing of the Isaeli Olympic Team in Munich. These attacks were aimed at groups worldwide not necessarily focused on the U.S. or the U.K.
These authors should do some historical study.
The terrorism list is long and bloody.... 9/11 is but one of their successful endeavors and terrorism was certainly not launched by the invasion of Iraq.

All this, I assume, whilst the Western democracies, such as the USA for example, practiced a benign and loving presence in the Middle East? How could those silly Arabs misunderstand that American and British involvement in the Middle East was for the good of the Arab people. Even those silly Palestinians who were forcibly removed from their homes and transplanted by the British probably misunderstood the kind regards the British held towards them. How can those crazy Arabs not understand that American support and sanctions for Israel is for the good of the Middle East! God bless America in its innocence and love for all peoples outside its borders.

As for the Iraq situation
Saddam Regime Document Dated May 1999 Reveals Plans for Terrorist Attacks in Europe (Translation).
Docex/FMSO/Pentagon Iraqi documents Website

Some of you may have read an article by Stephan Hayes of the Weekly Standard where he wrote about terrorist operations planed by Saddam regime in May 1999 to be conducted in Europe and elsewhere. The code name of the terrorist operations was called “Blessed July”. The operations were planned by Uday Saddam Hussein who was in charge of Saddam Feedeyeens and they called him as well the Supervisor or the Commander as you will read in the translation below. This Iraqi document ISGZ-2004-01894 is yet another powerful proof that Saddam regime was heavily involved with terrorism and President Bush made the absolute right decision to remove such a terrorist regime from power after 9/11. And this document is yet another proof to show liberals and their media that they are simply lying when they say that Saddam regime has no connections to terrorism, it was not just connections but the regime by itself was a “Terrorist Regime”.

The translation below was made by the Pentagon translator(s) and the translated document was posted on the FMSO Iraqi documents website before it was unfortunately shut down on November 2nd 2006. Fortunately I was able to download it and save it before the website shut down

and on and on and on and on..... I don't have time to list all of them ...
The Janes website has an extraordinary collection of things on terrorism out of the middle east aimed at western democracies.
As I said before the authors should read up on history.

You can roll yor eyes all you want, the fact reamins the article is crap. Terrorism has existed decades before the war on terror.
And why don't you mention aid towards Egypt and Jordan?

This was for the Israeli-palestians conflict, it has nothing to do with western democratic nations. The way you interpreted terrorism, is the terrorism-definition of the US government and G8 nations. I think you should do some serious historical study.

If you put terrorism supported by the cia around the world, combined with terrorism defined by peoples like you, yes the list is long, however, if you take for granted that cia actions arent terrorisms, then no the terrorism list defined by peoples like you isnt that long and bloody to compare with what the us and the coaltion of the "Brave" did.

Back to the history books Logic
Palestinians have been the instruments of terror for many middle eastern nations who want to maintain a peaceful relationship with the western nations for monetary purposes while funding terrorism.
You obviously have no historical background and are locked into the past few years as terrorism has become more publicly aired as 'news' to those who have no understanding of what has gone before.
This is an issue which has been perpetuated for decades, but for many of the members here 9/11 is the 'beginning' of any knowledge you have.

How witless.
Terrorism was grown into adulthood long before George Bush cared about it.

My apologies to the Dutch in my omission of including their own personal terrorists

Nine Convicted in Dutch Terrorism Case

By TOBY STERLING Associated Press Writer
The Associated Press
AMSTERDAM, Netherlands — Dutch judges convicted nine men Friday of belonging to a terrorist group, a landmark verdict that concludes promoting a violent version of Islam can itself be an act of terrorism.
The case opens a new way for prosecutors to stop potential terrorists and for the Netherlands to tackle the broader problem of the spread of radicalism among Muslim youth.
Lawyers for the men said they will appeal.
Two men received 15- and 13-year prison terms for attempted murder after a clash with police during their arrest. One received a five-year term for possessing a loaded machine gun.
The rest were sentenced to up to two years in prison. All were found to have spread hateful propaganda among their friends and on the Internet, encouraging Muslims to join a holy war against the West.
Though most sentences were short, the judgment was sweeping.
"Anyone who preaches hate and violence lays the basis for committing crimes directed at instilling fear among the people and destroying Dutch democracy," said Judge Rene Elkerbout, reading the three-judge panel's ruling.
"This is what the suspects contributed to. The court weighs that heavily against them."
The convictions were won on the basis of new legislation giving law enforcement agencies more power to investigate terrorist suspects, including wiretapping, and raising the penalties for terrorism-related crimes.
Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende praised "police and prosecutors for getting a conviction."
"This shows that the new laws we've passed are having an effect," he said at his weekly news briefing. Membership in a terrorist organization was made a crime in a law that took effect in August 2004.
"It's the first time a group has been found to be a criminal organization with a terrorist intent, and the suspects got heavier sentences because of that," said prosecution spokesman Wim de Bruin. Digna van Boetzelaer, a prosecution spokeswoman, added the decision "will help us in future terrorism cases."

The convicted men, known as the Hofstad Group, included Mohammed Bouyeri, who already is serving a life sentence for the 2004 murder of filmmaker Theo van Gogh.
The murder shook the Netherlands, once renowned for its peacefulness and tolerance, and led to a wave of violence in which mosques and churches were destroyed in retaliatory attacks.
Bouyeri was found guilty of being a ringleader of the group, but judges could add nothing to his sentence.
Two Dutch Muslims, Ismael Aknikh and Jason Walters, received the heaviest sentences for throwing a hand grenade during their arrest on Nov. 10, 2004, which injured five policemen. Walters, a convert to Islam, is the son of a U.S. soldier and a Dutch mother.
The Interior Ministry says the two are among 150 radical Muslims in the Netherlands capable of carrying out terrorist attacks. It estimates several thousand other youths are sympathetic to militant causes and susceptible to being recruited.
Muslims make up around 6 percent of the Dutch population.
Prosecutors had argued the Hofstad group was terrorist in nature because in its vision of Islam, violence is the ultimate goal.
But the court rejected that reasoning. Drawing conclusions that the prosecutors had never argued, the judges said the group must be considered a terrorist organization because it "incited violence, or spread hate or threats" against non-Muslims.
They cited as an example the message Bouyeri had impaled in Van Gogh's corpse with a knife. It threatened Dutch politicians with death and Western governments with destruction.
Similar texts were found in possession of other group members, in which "the killing of nonbelievers in general and some politicians in particular is directly discussed," the ruling said.
"In addition, they talk about the great fear that this will cause. There can be no other conclusion than that these are murder threats with a terrorist intent, namely the destruction of political and constitutional structures and inspiring great fear in the populace," the ruling said.
Group members attended cult-like meetings at Bouyeri's home under the guidance of a spiritual leader, Redouan al-Issar, who fled the country shortly before Van Gogh's murder and is now believed to be in jail in Syria.
Defense lawyer Ronald van der Horst called the judgment "scandalous." He said, by the judges' reasoning "you can be imprisoned for many years simply for having papers that the authorities say you shouldn't have."
Van der Horst, who represented Aknikh, said that other than Bouyeri, the defendants had no link with Van Gogh's killing and were just a loosely knit group of friends.
But Geert Wilders, an anti-immigration politician who was threatened in Bouyeri's letter, said the ruling didn't go far enough.
"This is a judgment befitting a banana republic: very weak and unacceptable," he said, adding that judges "don't understand the threat posed by Muslim extremism."
A judgment worthy of Sanctus' approval and commendation!

WITLESS?? Sounds almost like a personal attack- be careful, robot-devil, we are on to you and your kind, smart as you might think you are you're in the same damn boat as I am

the "fear" you describe is the same "fear" that keeps me from reding papers about how muslims are inherently evil, and how Black people are inferior, and if that's "fear", label me "afraid"

Robot.

She obviously dosn't know what terrorism is or simply refuses to be objective, in my opinion the nation who is responsible for the death of approximately 3 million people in Iraq qualifys as terrorist.
That opinion is shared by the majority of the worlds people many of whom endure the heavy hand of imperial deciet and violence.
The world will never be safe or just untill those crimes are paid for. All of the perps must stand trial for war crimes and holocaust. This must happen or there will be no peace anywhere.
