A radical Muslim cleric was among six men seized in a series of anti-terror raids this morning.
Abu Izzadeen, 31, who once barracked Home Secretary John Reid at a meeting in east London, was held at his home in Leytonstone.
The raids were part of a "long and complex" investigation into radical preachers and Muslim leaders who incite "holy war".
Anti-terror sources said the inquiry centred on radicalisation and fund-raising for terrorist acts abroad. There was no suggestion they were fomenting terror plots in this country.
Izzadeen, whose real name is Omar Brooks, was one of six men arrested by officers from Scotland Yard’s Counter Terrorism Command.
The raids took place at one address in Luton and five addresses in Leytonstone, Manor Park, Leyton, Aldgate and Southall.
Izzadeen, who has previously described the London bombers as "completely praiseworthy", identified with the views of Mohammad Sidique Khan, the ringleader of the London attacks.
Police said the arrests came after a "long and complex" inquiry into alleged incitement and radicalisation of people to commit terrorist acts. The operation is understood to have involved extensive surveillance by undercover officers.
None of the police in today’s raids was armed and there were no injuries during the operation. More searches were taking place this morning.
The men were being held at a central London police station. A police spokesman said: "The arrests form part of a long-term proactive and complex investigation into alleged incitement and radicalisation for the purposes of terrorism, as well as alleged provision of financial support for international terrorism."
