Friday was Red Nose Day in Britain, which is held every two years to raise money for the Comic Relief charity which helps poor children in Africa. It's tradition for people to buy comedy red noses to wear, with the proceeds going to Comic Relief and also for people, and celebrities, to host events to raise cash.

CHEEKY British troops in Iraq showed a different kind of bravery — and a lot more beside — by stripping off for yesterday’s Red Nose Day.

They led thousands of good sports back home who cheerfully made fools of themselves to raise millions of pounds for Comic Relief.

The servicemen and woman took 12 saucy snaps for a charity calendar at their HQ near Basra. In one they pose with a helicopter, in others they cover their modesty with desert helmets, machine tools or office equipment.

The calendar by 902 Expeditionary Air Wing — a tri-service force overseeing air operations in the area — has already raised hundreds of pounds.

Organiser RAF Sergeant Ellie Morgan said: “We got loads of volunteers and everyone was very brave.”

Blonde Ellie, 36, led by example, peeling down to a bikini for the first shot taken, surrounded by fellas.

She said: “As the bikini picture was the first one we took, we were the bravest!

“But it was quite scary. We had to go off and hide in the desert. The photographer came in for some stick but I think he loved it all really!”

A Comic Relief spokeswoman said: “The Forces always support us in a big way”.

Back in Britain, BBC chiefs were hoping to beat the £63million total raised by the last Red Nose Day in 2005.

By 9pm the total had already reached more than £15million.

Millions of viewers saw hosts Jonathan Ross, Russell Brand and Lenny Henry introduce sketches from the likes of Ricky Gervais, Catherine Tate and Sacha Baron Cohen as Borat.
