A ceremonial loving cup dedicated to St George will today begin a tour of England's 50 cities as the emblem of a campaign to make April 23 – St George's Day – as big as the feast of St Patrick, patron saint of Ireland.

Bruno Peek of the Celebrate St George’s Day campaign with the ceremonial loving cup. The cup will be passed around all of England's 50 cities where city leaders, such as the mayors, will drink spiced apple juice from it.

The £30,000 cup will begin its journey in Norwich, where the Lord Mayor, civic representatives and Scouts, among others, will sup spiced apple juice before passing the vessel on to the next city.

The organiser of the campaign, Bruno Peek, who stage managed the Queen's Golden Jubilee and the Trafalgar Weekend of 2005, said: "A loving cup represents peace, harmony and friendship.

"We are asking everyone who calls England their home to take part in a national day of celebration.

The 19 lb vessel is solid-silver gilt and inscribed with the evocative command from Shakespeare's Henry V: "Cry God for Harry, England and Saint George!"

Its tour will end in Westminster on April 23, when diners at a formal banquet hope to lead the nation in a 10.45pm toast to England's patron saint.

The tour is part of a wider Celebrate St George's Day campaign that will raise money for the Royal National Institute for Deaf People, the Association for International Cancer Research and the Women's Royal Voluntary Service.
