Direct attacks, roadside and suicide bombs are on the increase. Robert Gates is out there to assess the situation and it must be clear to him that the U.S. and allied forces are in big trouble in Afghanistan just as in Iraq.

Bush will surely announce a surge in forces, but the Taliban appear to have beaten him to it.

Attacks by militants crossing into Afghanistan from Pakistan have tripled since September along portions of the border, a senior American intelligence official said Tuesday, prompting calls for a greater effort by Pakistan to curb the influx and a larger deployment of American and other NATO soldiers here.

K - However, the Canadian general in Afghanistan is saying "things are going well". It can only be political when we hear this despite the reality of what is on the ground over there.

"I've seen more signs in the last two days that this is winnable than in any of my previous visits," he said. "How far and how fast is determined by the resources that you have to throw at it."

The one good thing from these devlopments is that Pakistan is being shown to be the real source of insurgents for Iraq and Afghanistan, which defeats Bush's agenda of blaming IRAN, which is obviously just to get public support for invading IRAN. No, it is Pakistan MrBush!!! Of course, Bush knows that he cannot attack Pakistan, or even be stern with them, because Pakistan has operable nuclear weapons.

This "Pakistan-Iran source of terrorists" disconnect occurs because it is not about terrorists or their origins - Bush's agenda is to control mid-east oil and Iran represents a big piece of that puzzle.

Meanwhile, Canadians are being sacrficed in Afghanistan for this Bush Agenda that Canada should be resisting rather than supporting. And it is costing us 1.5 billion dollars a year to do. Lets bring them home eh? They are NOT winning; it is a war that CANNOT be won.

Normally winter is a quiet time for fighting in Afghanistan, when mountain passes become snowbound. Fighting usually picks up again in the spring. Right now, militants are probably buying weapons, training and planning. Wait til April...

Actually, Afghanistan is the calmest it's been in months. After the serious thrashings we handed out during Medusa, the militants turtled. Couple that with the statement that earth_as_one made (which is very true), and you have the reason why the last Canadian killed in action was back in November. A month and a half is a significant amount of time for no one to be killed in a war zone.
