Muslims and Jews join gay-laws protest

BY STEVE DOUGHTY

3rd January 2007

Dr Majid Katme, of the Islamic Medical Association, is taking part in a protest against an EU gay rights law

Prominent Muslims and Jews united with Christians yesterday to voice concern at laws boosting gay rights.

Churches are organising demonstrations next week against the Sexual Orientation Regulations, which are due to come into force in April.

Campaigners claim the rules will force religious groups to promote homosexual rights in contradiction to their teachings and could persecute those who disapprove of homosexuality on moral grounds.

Dr Majid Katme, of the Islamic Medical Association, yesterday urged Muslims to join protests against the "unjust" laws, including a torchlight parade in Westminster to coincide with a Lords debate next Tuesday.

And for the first time the Board of Deputies of British Jews voiced concern over the legislation.

The regulations, which are in line with EU requirements, will punish businesses and organisations which discriminate on grounds of sexual orientation.

Hotels which refuse to let double rooms to gay couples could, for example, be taken to court.

Christian campaigners fear churches which refuse to let out parish halls or conference centres to gay groups would face legal action, as could schools which fail to teach that homosexuality is equal to marriage.

The Church of England has complained that vicars who refuse to bless civil partnerships may be also targeted. And the Roman Catholic church has threatened to close its nine adoption and fostering agencies if they are forced to place children with homosexual couples.

The outcry has piled pressure on Communities Secretary Ruth Kelly - a devout Roman Catholic who is thought to have approved the regulations reluctantly - to rethink the legislation.

Dr Katme made his plea to Muslims in a letter circulated to several hundred supporters and 40 imams, who are expected to publicise the issue during Friday prayers. Urging Muslims to "join our Christian friends in their campaign against the new proposed law on sexual orientation", he said: "It is against our religious rights and against our human rights and against our conscience and religious beliefs to have this new unjust law forced on all of us British Muslims."

Dr Katme, a prominent figure in campaigns against abortion and the decline of traditional family life, warned that the new laws would require "Muslims and Christian believers legally to accept and appoint homosexuals or anyone with any sexual deviation in our Muslim institutions and centres, mosques, schools, clubs, companies, hotels, business, shops etc".

He urged supporters to carry banners which were "polite, sensible and on the issue only".

Nadia Lipsey, spokesman for the Board of Deputies - the representative organisation of British Jewry - said yesterday: "It must be possible for people to live their lives in the manner in which they choose as long as it does not impinge upon the rights of others.

"We hope that to this effect the regulations will be framed in such a way that allows for both the effective combating of discrimination in the provision of goods and services whilst respecting freedom of conscience and conviction."

Miss Kelly has yet to publish final details of how the regulations will work. However, similar proposals for Northern Ireland say anyone found guilty of discrimination will faces fines of between £500 and £1,000 for a first offence and up to £25,000 for repeat "serious" offences.

Andrea Minichiello Williams, of the Lawyers Christian Fellowship, which is organising the London demo, said: "The regulations not only force people to assist and promote activities contrary to the historic teachings of their faith, whether Christian, Jewish or Muslim, but also censor them from speaking freely about their beliefs."

One of the banes of homosapiens is the bombastic intolerance, self-righteousness, and demagoguery in a branch of our species I call "troglodytes". Also the bane of wanting influence in or over someone else's life.
Humans are humans, worry about your own sins (if you believe in that sort of bilge) and leave everyone else to theirs.

People once said the exact same thing about mixed race marriages, even found helpful biblical quotes.

Bigotry is Bigotry even if you think its ok.

I think a wise man once said that this is my life and you a merely an extra. This is true, what was said above is also true, interracial marrages were and still are fround upon. But I ask why?, it's none of our business, as long as each person finds the person they're looking for...so what?.

Besides, they're cutting down on the huge over-populated planet we live in by not breeding and for that, I applaude them. On top of this, some find it in their hearts to look after unwanted children. What can I say?...sure, there are some that say "god made Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve", but who are we to say what is right and what is wrong. If it was such a sin, whould god not strike them down any way?. Ccertainly, the god of the Jewish and Islamic faiths doesn't generally have a problem smyting people in such a way.

whenever gay relations are mentioned, why is it someone always has to mention paedophelia (the ae is a dipthong by the way, correct english and all that)?...whats the connection?....is it because it's too close to home?, or something, like gay relations, you seem to misunderstand and have not idea about?

Either way, ignorance is ignorance.

Nah, I have a go at Americans all the time, a fair number of them are gay, just be more generalised in your attacks.....for example, I think America has been bastardising the English language for hundreds of years, to an extent that it should no longer be called "English", but infact "American".....and for goodness sake, if you are going to call it English in the lockers below lady liberty island....please dont put a US flag where the French and German ones are for their languages........that nearly caused me to be chucked off the island by the park rangers.

But I'm not gay.....honest (although lol).

Hmmm, gays certainly are aggressive political organizers. For folks supposedly making up only about 5% of the population they seem to carry political heft at a multiple of that. And they're awfully good at keeping their agenda in the news. It is an amazing turnaround for the orientation group that faced blanket stigma just 30 years ago. Intriguing.
I'd like to see voters get more politically active in democracies. Voter initiatives, voter rights, penalties for representatives and parliaments that ignore voter preferences. Why not? We're all supposed to be so gungho about this fabled form of government that holds office in the West and yet most days the guy on the street can't stand it. Wonder why.

Erik, for the rest of this thread use the word "BUSHES" instead of gays and everything will be fine. An example,I think those Bushes made a deal with the liberals to paint the conservatives as intolerant Nobody gets offended except for the bushes and it is ok to hate them.

I would rather call them by their actions, which is "ANUS PRICKERS" but i know homosexuality is a holly-cow here in canada so i will use a biblical term and call them "SODOMITES" (even though i'm practically an- aethiest). I wonder if i'm allowed to quote a biblical term, or will i get another E-mail from the administrator of this forum telling me: i'm off-topic and a biggot.

Actually, more heterosexual men routinely engange in anal sex than homosexual men.

Furthermore, heterosexual teens in the silver ring society (a christian abstinence group) have the highest anal sex rates of all.

Not that any of that matters, but if your gonna be a bigot, be an HONEST bigot.

Well, it will be interesting to watch the ongoing tension between the non-secular community and gays in the years ahead. Many Christian denominations have been split over the issue. Something they didn't need given the freefall in their attendance in the last quarter century in the western world. Then you have the Muslims. Much better organized, much more focussed than the Christians. That's where the wall is. As Muslim communities continue their diaspora and grow within the West, the real battle between gays and the religious community lies ahead.
