The men and women featured in today's New Year Honours list, from the rock singer Rod Stewart to the unsung heroes of the voluntary sector, will for the first time be able to show the world on a daily basis that they have been honoured by the Queen.
The Cabinet Office yesterday unveiled a buttonhole badge which can be worn on the lapel by recipients of honours ranging from MBEs to knighthoods.
Sir Gus O'Donnell, the Cabinet Secretary, said: 'These emblems are a visible sign of a person's accomplishments. I hope many will choose to wear them with pride.'" Today's list features the highest achievers from the worlds of showbusiness, sport, the arts, the Civil Service, the business community and the charitable sector.
Women accounted for 40 per cent of the awards compared with 37 per cent a year ago. None will give the Queen more pleasure than the MBE awarded to her granddaugther Zara Phillips, 11th in line to the throne, for her services to equestrianism.
