Anthony... to a tea: Blair's mug joins the spin
1st September 2006

To a politician obsessed with spin, even a mug can be of service.

With his leadership under fire from many quarters, Tony Blair has been photographed clutching a mug which outlines the special qualities of those called Anthony.

The blue and white mug, from which the Prime Minister was pictured drinking tea during an interview with The Times at Chequers, spells out a clear warning for critics and rivals within the Labour Party such as Gordon Brown.

"Your refined inner voice drives your thoughts and your deeds," it says. "You're a man who's in charge, others follow your lead. Others think you're influential, ethical, and kind."

On the reverse side of the mug, we learn that the name Anthony means Priceless One.

The personality of Anthony is then described as: "Humble and private, you view the world through a dreamy and reflective lens."

Unfortunately, not all the associations conjured by the mug are quite so positive. The bird associated with the name Anthony is said to be the marabou, a stork. It is widespread in Africa where it is a renowned as an unpleasant scavenger and predator.

When not found hanging around rubbish dumps or rotting carcasses, the marabou eats snakes and rats. It is acclaimed as the one of the ugliest birds in the world.

It is not the first time Mr Blair, a keen tea drinker, has pressed a mug into the service of spin.

After the birth of his son Leo in 2000, he was pictured outside Downing Street with one bearing a photograph of his first three children on the side while updating reporters about the baby.
